Vijay's daredevil stunts in Malaysia!

Vijay was in Malaysia for his next venture, Kuruvi, directed by Dharani. The shooting for this film is on at a fast pace and Vijay is all pumped up the way it is progressing. Actor Suman, last seen playing the baddie in Rajinikanth’s Sivaji released earlier this year, is donning a similar role in this film as well.
A profligate bar-cum-discotheque set resembling one in Malaysia has been erected for this purpose in AVM studios. The sequence to be shot there is that of Vijay dancing on the floor of the discotheque when a bevy of thugs, barge in to beat him up on Suman’s command.
This is followed by an extensive stunt sequence shot very realistically and Vijay is said to have followed the instructions of the stunt choreographer to the T, in order to get the scene as realistic as possible. He is usually one person who performs stunts in a style of his own and in this film he has gone with the script and remained true to it. Hope this gives his fans another Gilli time.

The year was also good for films catering for Chennai’s multiplex audiences and those made on a shoe-string budget, featuring newcomers and dealing with fresh subjects.
Film making and marketing also underwent a sea change as corporates such as Pyramid Saimira brought in a certain degree of professionalism into the industry.
Top five grossers
Here is the list of five top grossers in Tamil, based on their box-office collection worldwide and production cost, as per trade sources.
Sivaji: It couldn’t get bigger than this. The Rajnikant-Shriya starrer, directed by Shankar, is said to be the costliest Tamil film ever made and was sold at a record price to distributors. The film actually opened huge with a record number of screens and highest gross collection of all time.
‘Sivaji’ once again ascertained the fact that Rajnikant is a one-man entertainment troupe who still holds sway over Tamil audiences and new cross-over audiences from the Hindi heartland.
Box-office verdict: Super Hit
Pokkiri: The film, released for Pongal 2007, turned out to be Vijay’s biggest hit. Remake of a Telugu film, director Prabhu Deva packaged it in such a way that it suited the taste of Tamil audiences who danced to the hit tunes of Mani Sharma.
The on-screen chemistry between Vijay and Asin was great and the film turned out to be the highest grossing Tamil film in Kerala.
It did extraordinary business across A, B and C stations in Tamil Nadu and also overseas. It established Vijay as the most saleable star after Rajnikant. The trade says it’s the most profitable movie of the year.

Illeana, the petite Goan beauty and the queen of Tollywood, is back in Kollywood. It is confirmed she will be the female lead opposite 'Ilayathalapathy' Vijay for his next film.
Ileana had earlier debuted in Tamil in KD opposite Ravikrishna and Kollywood’s current hot property Tamanna.

The two stars vying for the superstar status are Vijay and Ajith. Both Vijay and Ajith have carved a niche for themselves with a loyal fan following that they managed to garner over the years. While Ajith is commonly referred to as Thala by his fans, Vijay is called Ilaya Thalapathi.
Here’s an analysis of how the year 2007 has been for these two stars. This year seems to have been a mixed baggage for both these actors. To put things in the right perspective, let us analyze their films from the beginning of the year. It began with Vijay’s Pokkiri pitted against Ajith’s Aalwar. While Pokkiri went on become one of Vijay’s biggest hits, Aalwar bit the dust, as it was just another run-on-the-mill Ajith movie offering nothing new for his fans. This phase was followed by a long absence of both these stars.
Then Ajith returned in an all-new avatar in Kreedom, which was critically acclaimed and was lauded for his restrained performance. Unfortunately, the movie didn’t go down well with his fans, as it didn’t have all the elements that were usually expected in Thala’s film. The director even tried to change the climax of the movie a few days after it was released but it was a little too late as by then it was rejected by his fans as being too serious and not masala enough.
Come deepavali and it was time again for a clash between the two actors. Vijay’s Azhagiya Tamil Magan had Rahman’s music and a dual role for him. To match this, Ajith’s Billa a remake of the 1980 Rajinikanth hit was getting ready with a stellar cast and dashing promos. Call it fate or destiny, ATM made it alone to the theatres but wasn’t able to capitalize on it; blame it on the bad script or poor direction.
The industry was pinning its hopes on Billa, which after many obstacles finally made it to the theatres on December 14, 2007. It couldn’t have given the box office a better reason to smile and end the year on a high. Billa finally did to Ajith, at the end of the year, what Pokkiri did to Vijay at the beginning. Good fortunes and luck couldn’t have struck them at diametrically opposite times of the year.

Kuruvi is sticking to its schedule. Barring a few unfortunate turn of events, this movie will be completed on time. So, now, it's time for new scripts to contend strongly for Vijay's dates.
Though there had been reports earlier that it was all but confirmed that Vijay will be working with Prabhu Deva after Kuruvi, the question to be answered is when will this project take off. Will it be just after Kuruvi or will it even be after another movie.
It is reported that Perarasu had narrated a plot to Vijay even before Kuruvi had begun and Vijay had suggested a few changes to the script. Now Perarasu is getting ready with the script.
Both Perarasu and Prabhu Deva have good track records with Vijay. Perarasu has done two movies with the star out of which one was a super hit – 'Thirupachi' – and the other was a good grosser – 'Sivakasi', and Prabhu Deva is no lesser by any means with his only movie with Vijay 'Pokkiri' turning out to be the one of the highest grossers of 2007.
We do not have clear news about Prabhu Deva's level of preparedness for his project. So, will it be a Thirupachi or a Pokkiri that we see next, we shall tell you soon.

Kuruvi is flying high! This film’s shooting is progressing at a rapid pace and the latest report is that Dharani, Vijay, Trisha and the rest of the Kuruvi team have taken off to Malaysia to can a song sequence. The song will supposedly be a high point of the movie. Looks like Tamil Nadu is not the only place that has people excited about Kuruvi, for the Malaysian government has also extended near unconditional support to the Kuruvi team for shooting.
Sources say that the team has access to areas that had been considered out of bounds for shootings and other such activities. Malaysia is certainly doing everything to promote itself as a friendly destination for the film industry to capture some scenic locations. They had earlier given similar support to the 2006 Hindi blockbuster Krish.
Moving on to other news about Kuruvi, reliable sources have given a brief but exciting insight into the plot of Kuruvi and from what we have heard it is going to be a thrill-a-minute ride for all of us. Here is what we got to know about the Kuruvi story.
Vijay plays a courier delivery guy in Kuruvi. The courier is being used as a safe transit route for many illegal substances like narcotics by a smuggling gang and Vijay and the rest of the courier firm is unaware of this. Fate lands Vijay, carrying one such parcel with smuggled goods, in jail. How he extricates himself from this mess and manages to bring the gang, headed by a respected name in the society, to the fore is being told in this thrill-a-minute chase story.
Suman, who epitomized the ‘all white’ clad villain in Sivaji is back doing the familiar role yet again, flashing the ‘Close Up’ smile and running an empire of crime. The story is said to be full of adventurous escapades of Vijay from the police, engaging chases and a race against time to prove his innocence and capturing the gang red-handed. A plot that is reminiscent of the breakneck chase sequence that was the highlight of his earlier film Ghilli.
The Ghilli team looks good enough to create a repeat of 2004 when Tamil New Year became a great celebration for all Ilaya Thalapathi fans. Hope they can pull it off this time too.

Despite the dissatisfaction of the Malaysian Tamils, the star nite is going on as planned on Dec 21 at Kuala Lumpur.
All arrangements for this are being made by Radhika's Radaan. Headed by dance master Kala, about 40 dancers are headed to Malaysia.
Vijay and Trisha have already left for Malaysia. After the star nite on 21 and 23, the pair will stay back in Malaysia for `Kuruvi' shoot.
Some of the stars participating in the event have already left day before night for Malaysia. Yesterday, Radhika and Sripriya left. Most of the other participants are leaving tonight for Malaysia.
Radharavi, Sarath Kumar, Sathyaraj, Prabhu, Vijay, Vikram, Surya, Abbas, Trisha, Nayantara, Sandhya, Reema Sen are some of the top stars who are participating. Asin has escaped. Even though the Hindi `Ghajini' shooting has stopped temporarily, Asin who is right now stationed in Mumbai, says she is very busy!

The hostility between Vijay and Ajith is a thing of the past. The two are now on very cordial terms, dining with each other, and praising each other that their friendship is winning the admiration of Kollywood.
'Billa' has won a name for the way it has been made and a host of stars including Jeeva and Ramesh turned up for the premiere at Chennai's Inox theatre.
Ajith arranged a special show of 'Billa' at Four Frames preview theater for his close friends. Vijay and his wife Sangeetha, Surya and Karthi attended the show.

On the Sets of Kuruvi
Vijay-Trisha starrer Kuruvi, directed by Dharani, started off on a tight schedule of shooting.
Huge sets were erected at the MGR Film City where a song sequence and some scenes were shot. Then the crew continued the shoot in Irungaattukottai. Another set was also put up at Sriperambudur.
Recent rains in the city postponed the shooting for two days. The call sheets of a group of models brought from Mumbai and Bangalore for the song sequence went waste due to the postponement. The models have been booked and paid in advance.
But the delay and the subsequent wastage does not seem to bother the crew and they are back in action.

The fans of Ajit and Vijay are fighting a no-hold war of words on the internet over Billa and ATM, but the two stars met up on Friday evening to watch the Ajit film at Chennai's premiere preview theatre Four Frames.
Ajit and his beautiful wife Shalini were holding a private show of Billa on its release day for their close friends. The guest list included arch rival (made out by the media?), Vijay and his lovely wife Sangeetha, Surya and his brother Karthi, and few friends from other walks of life.
Ajit the perfect host that he is, made everybody comfortable, and saw to it that all his friends had a good time watching Billa, and Vijay the gentleman that he is, after the show went and hugged him.
In Kollywood there is a lot of professional rivalry but they do not carry it to their personal life. Ajit and Vijay may be bitter foes at work place but in real life they are good buddies like Rajni and Kamal.

Everything about Trisha makes headline news. But the biggest headline-makers in the recent past were the ones about her new film with her good-ol' friend Vijay.
Vijay and Trisha were known in the industry to be thick family friends. In fact, there were times when Vijay's wife used to recommend Trisha for the heroine roles in his films because she thought that the actress and her husband share an excellent onscreen chemistry.
But recently rumors began that Vijay was consciously avoiding working with her because he didn't want to constantly keep repeating his heroines. However, the gossip columns were convinced that there was more to this "break-up" than that. When Trisha became the heroine of his new film, it had created rumors of a different kind.
Now, the lead actor and actress have decided to strike peace on the sets instead of maintaining a cold hostility.
Recently, Prabhudeva announced that he intends to do another film with Vijay. Even before everybody begins to wonder if his good friend Trisha would be the heroine of this film too, the actor has made it clear to his close friends that it wouldn't be the case.

The Ghilli team, currently shooting Kuruvi, is all set to take off to Malaysia.
For starters, Kuruvi is Vijay’s next film where he is paired with his lucky mascot Trisha. The film is directed by Dharani, the man behind commercial blockbusters like Dhil, Dhool and Ghilli. The film is produced by Udayanidhi, the son of M.K. Stalin.
The unit will be shooting in picturesque locations of Malaysia that have not yet been captured on film.
Almost the entire team that made Ghilli is working on Kuruvi including music director Vidayasagar who has given rocking numbers for Dharani’s films.
The ‘Appadi Podu’ number in Ghilli is still in the minds of Vijay fans and the composer promises that there will be an even more rocking number in Kuruvi.

I'm a regular viewer of your website and enjoy it thoroughly from the latest news to the articles. Recently a few of my cousins who are big fans of vijay got a chance to meet him at his house in Chennai. As I'm in Sydney, Australia I was unable to be present and it was mentioned when they met Vijay that I was his big fan.
Me being an ardent fan of Vijay, I should have been there, but Ilayathalapathy responded by telling them to call me on my mobile phone and spent a few minutes talking to me. I was touched by this noble gesture as you do not normally expect such from one of the most prominent young heroes of Tamil cinema today. Even during the conversation, he enquired what I was studying and what my plans were for the future, he also mentioned that he was immersed in his Kuruvi project with Dharani and Trisha and that it was a fast paced action movie like Ghilli.
You mention noble deeds to charity by stars, but Ilayathalapthy today showed a humble deed that made the day of one of his millions of fans around the world.

Nayanthara bags plum role with Ilaya Thalapathy

The career graph of Nayanthara, the beautiful actress from Kerala, has been steadily climbing with plum assignments in her kitty. She began her Tamil innings in Aiyya with Sarathkumar and went on to do the role of Durga in Chandramukhi who wooed the Super star. Her 'balalaika' number in Sivaji has enabled her to capitalize her position in the industry very well.
Now, with Billa, expectations have reached an all time high and the stills of the film reveal a svelte and suave Nayan. She is on an enviable track now with projects like 'Yaaradi Nee Mohini' with Dhanush and Sathyam with Vishal.
She has been carving a niche for herself in Tollywood too where she has been paired with popular actors like Nagarjuna and Ravi Teja to name a few. She was in the fray for the role of Vijay's heroine in Kuruvi but missed it narrowly to Trisha. However her patience seems to have paid off as she has signed on the dotted line for an unnamed project to be directed by Prabhu Deva with Ilaya Thalapathy as the hero. Vijay will join Prabhu Deva after he wraps up Dharani's Kuruvi. The combination of Vijay and Nayan under Prabhu Deva's direction is something to look forward to.

| Hari is one of the busiest directors these days. He takes up a new project as soon as he finishes one. After 'Vel', he is now shaping the story for a film that has Bharath in the lead role. The rumour mills are busy churning out stories that Hari will direct a film featuring Ilaya Thalapathy Vijay as hero. When asked about this Hari simply shrugs off. “I haven’t even met Vijay yet. No efforts have been made in this regard so far. I don’t know from where these gossips generate” was his response. Why can’t Hari, known for his skills to make a hit movie, give a hit movie to his brother-in-law Arun Vijay, who is struggling to take off? “That will happen soon”, replied the director. Vijay's four films with Cheran

This was mouthed by Vijay himself at the audio launch of Karu.Pazhaniappan' s latest film Pirivom Santhippom. While speaking at the event he said that he had done 4 films with director Cheran, who was also present at the function. This kept everyone guessing, but Vijay was quick to clarify.
He mentioned that it was Cheran's assistant Jaganathan who directed him for Puthiya Geethai and Cheran supervised the shooting of the film for four days. Those five days, Vijay claimed, he felt like acting in four films of Cheran as he felt the director paid a lot of attention to detail. He even expressed his desire to act in Cheran's direction.
The event wore a different look when a leading director opined that his assistant director's presence intimidated him. Now how often have you heard that? We guess never. Parthipan made this revelation about his assistant Karu. Pazhaniappan to an audience that had all the bigwigs of Kollywood at the Santham Theater during the same event.
Parthipan, the eloquent speaker that he is, was at his jovial best. This isn't something we haven't seen in the past but what made this special was that he didn't spare anyone on stage.

Veering away from commercial films, Vijay has been inspired to do meaningful roles.
While most top heroes in Tamil hesitate to do realistic roles, nowadays many directors themselves turn heroes. Ilaya Dalapathi has announced that he is ready to give it a go.
When talking at a function in Chennai, Vijay said, "Cheran is a wonderful director. In 'Pudhiya Geethai' I acted for 4 days under his directorial supervision. He has the knack of getting the best out of an actor. I want to do a full length film under his direction, but he seems to have turned into an actor himself."
In response, Cheran said he's ready to fulfill Vijay's wish.
"Vijay is to have acted in 'Pokkisham.' It was I who did not make use of the call sheet he gave. If I get another opportunity, I would love to direct Vijay in a different kind of role," said Cheran and Vijay nodded his head in assent.
Following this, Vijay has decided to check out stories with Cheran. So get ready to see Vijay in a film directed by Cheran, in the near future.

The star studded function marked the launch of the music track of 'Pirivom Santhipom' held in Santham Cinemas in Chennai on December 9. Vijay and Prabhu Deva released the audio. Rama Narayanan, Kaliapili G. Sekaran, Abhirami Ramanathan, Parthiban, Madhavan, Vidyasagar, and Dharani, were among the dignitaries who graced the occasion. Cheran revealed that he could not make a film featuring Vijay despite the fact that the star had given him call sheet for a movie titled 'Pokkisham'. “The delay in making the Autograph was the reason for not being able to make use of his call sheet”, said Cheran. He too expressed his eager to direct Vijay. “I want the Tamil people to see you in a different profile”. Parthiban’s speech was full of praise on the film and the heroine Sneha. We could see Sneha blushing while Parthiban went on heaping laurels on her beauty and her amazing smile. He also had some words to praise for Cheran for his dedication, down to earth attitude, and hard work. The song screened in the function portrayed a grand marriage of family belonging to Karaikkudi Chettiyar community. Abhirami Ramanathan revealed that he too was belonged to the community and requested everyone belonging to the community to view the film. The Vidyasagar musical has the stamp of his melody. Pazhaniappan' s third venture shot to fame after he released the first set pictures of the Cheran-Sneha- starrer and people fell in love with the movie instantly.

 Vijay and Suriya will be involved in two different releases on the same day at the same complex. The releases, however, have nothing to do with their films. Vijay releases 'Pirivom Santhipom' audio in Santham Cinemas, while Suriya releases 'Indiralohathil Naa Azhagappan' audio at Sathyam Cinemas. Both functions take place in the same day (December 9) at almost the same time. Pirivom audio release will be at 9 AM while Indiralogathil release will be at 9.30 AM. Indiralohathil, produced by Seventh Channel 'Manickam' Narayanan, is a comedy entertainer featuring Vadivelu in the lead role. Pyramid Music releases the audio. Suriya will present the first copy of the audio CD to Silambarasan. The first copy of Pirivom audio CD will be received by Prabhu Deva. Music director Sabesh Murali is said to have given a touch of folk music in Indiralohathil music track. The sensational hot singer 'Mirchi' Suchi and Vadivel have crooned for the item number that features sensuous Shriya with Vadivel on screen. With sensational young stars like Vijay, Surya, Silambarasan and Prabhu Deva attending two different functions at the same time, the media persons, especially photo journalists, would find it tough to choose between the two functions. |

 Udhayanidhi Stalin, grandson of Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, heaps laurels on Vijay. “It's a nice experience for me to work with Vijay. Since 'Kuruvi' being my first production, he taught me many things. He is simple, adorable and affectionate” , says Udhayanidhi. 'Kuruvi', directed by Dharani features Vijay, Trisha, Suman among others in the cast. Vidyasagar scores the music. “Vijay and director Dharani proved themselves successful in 'Ghilli'. We just want to repeat the magic. The script is interesting, catchy and racy. Hope everything comes out well.” It is worth recalling that Udhayanidhi was very particular about the choice of hero in his maiden venture as producer. Azhagam Perumal, one of director Mani Ratnam’s assistants, last seen in Kattrathu Tamil as the Tamil teacher is reverting to direction. He started his career playing a small role in Alaipayuthey as Madhavan’s Malayalee landlord and later went on to direct Dum Dum Dum for Mani’s production house.
Azhagam Perumal grabbed the audiences’ attention big time with his performance in Selva Raghavan’s Pudupettai in which he played a politician.
According to him, he prefers to act only when the roles interest him and it is not something that he is looking forward to. He is working on a script and plans to start his next venture soon for which he is eyeing two leading male stars. Whether it is Vikram and Surya or Ajith and Vijay - we will have to wait and watch.

Vijay accepts Minister's request

 We reported yesterday that Union Health Minister Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss had requested to Vijay to avoid smoking on screen. Ilaya Thalapathy Vijay has responded positively to the appeal. “I will not act in smoking scenes anymore”, says Vijay. Vijay, who is currently shooting for Kuruvi near Chennai, has said that he would not act in scenes, which would demand the hero to smoke on the screen. The minister had urged the actor to stay away from smoking on screen. The minister said, “The actor has huge fan following with youngsters and children admiring him a lot”. Hence, Vijay, Dr. Anbumani said, should not set a bad example for them by acting in such scenes. Vijay immediately accepted his request. “Since I played a role with negative shade in 'Azhagiya Thamizh Magan', I had to smoke on screen. However I would ensure not to repeat the same again” he said. It was a healthy move by the minister to make a request instead of trying to force his opinion through enacting a law. It is a commendable response from the leading hero for an appeal with noble intentions. It could well become a positive precedence for others as well. |

In his upcoming action-thriller Kuruvi, actor Vijay seems to have suggested a few significant changes after viewing the rushes that were shot earlier. Now the scenes that were shot to please his hardcore fans with some larger than life heroism will either go under the scissors or suffer a package alteration, based on his advice.
It seems Vijay is a tad apprehensive about too much of blind masala machismo not working out among the movie going public these days. He in fact is reported to have suggested to director, Dharani to project subtle affable heroism, which was the forte of their last outing – Gilli.
Kuruvi has already generated enough hype, as it is the debut production venture of Udhayanidhi, grandson of Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi. With music scored by Dharani’s lucky mascot - Vidyasagar, Trisha plays Vijay’s ladylove. The movie also has Suman, Vivek, Manivannan, and Malavika playing significant roles. When it comes to abide by requests, Vijay seems to follow his idol Rajini in every possible way. Recently, at a Health Conference, the Union Health Minister Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss put forth a request to Vijay to quit smoking on screen as it sets a bad precedent to the youth, to which the actor also acquiesced.
His current project with Dharani, produced by Udhayanidhi, titled Kuruvi is going on at a rapid pace. After which he is expected to star in a film to be directed by Prabhu Deva. The latest buzz is that Hari is all set to direct Vijay in a movie under the Kavithalaya banner.

When Ilaiyathalapathy joined hands with the actor-director Prabhu Deva, they brought out the super hit Pokkiri. The movie was the remake of Prabhu Deva's Telugu Pokiri, which was also a big hit. And now, the director is busy making the same in Hindi with Salman Khan in the lead. Looks like he's trying to make the best of a winning script.

When Ilaiyathalapathy joined hands with the actor-director Prabhu Deva, they brought out the super hit Pokkiri. The movie was the remake of Prabhu Deva's Telugu Pokiri, which was also a big hit. And now, the director is busy making the same in Hindi with Salman Khan in the lead. Looks like he's trying to make the best of a winning script.

Chennai: After taking on superstar Rajnikanth for his on-screen smoking, Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss on Sunday advised popular Tamil hero Vijay to stop showing smoking scenes in his films.
"He is an young actor and a large number of youth are following him. I advise him to stop showing smoking scenes in his films. I am requesting this not only as a Union Minister but also as a Tamil and a doctor," he said.
There was a misconception in the film industry that the films would run successfully only if it had smoking screens, he added.
Ramadoss said he had written to Rajnikanth a few years ago, requesting him not to smoke before the camera as it could have a bad influence on his massive fan following.
His two latest films Chandramukhi and Sivaji - The Boss did not have any smoking scenes and they turned out to be huge successes, setting a record in the history of Tamil film industry, he said.

Azhagiya Tamil Magan : Feel good
| Screen India Naresh Flamboyant Vijay in a dual role takes the viewers on a rollercoaster ride of entertainment for a two and half hours  in Swarga Chitra’s Azhagiya Tamil Magan. Athletic Guru (Vijay likes the kind hearted Abhinaya (Shreya) daughter of a business tycoon Anand Cheyyar (Ashish Vidyarthi). She reciprocates his love when she comes to know that he lost the running race to her friend’s brother Shakthi (Sreeman) so that Shakthi could get a job under the sports quota. Anand Cheyyar agrees for their marriage and after a dramatic entry, the boy’s father (Thanikella Bharani) too accepts his son’s choice. Abhi goes to Guru’s village along with him and convinces his mother (Geetha) who till then was apprehensive about a city bahu. In the meantime, Guru realises that he has extra sensory perception (ESP) as he foresees the death of the little girl who lives in the same bungalow as he is. He couldn’t save her but he could save his father and the villagers averting a train accident. Much to the chagrin of Abhi and her father, Guru stays away from his engagement ceremony. The reason his ESP told that he is going to knife Abhi in a ruined fort. In order to avoid the incident he leaves Chennai and heads for Mumbai. To his surprise he finds his look-alike Prasad (Vijay) there. Before he could reach him, he is hit by a moving lorry and is hospitalised. Prasad works for a Bank and illegally finances the money to a Seth (Sayaji Shinde) in Chennai. To recover the money he comes to Chennai. Abhi spots him outside the Seth’s office complex and takes him home thinking that he is Guru. A Casanova of sorts Prasad assumes the role of Guru and plans to usurp the girl and her property. Following the release of ATM, Vijay has gone forward to his next project Kuruvi being produced by Udhayanidhi and directed by Dharani. The Ghilli team of Dharani, Vijay and Trisha are back in action once again and shooting is proceeding at a brisk pace just like any of Dharani's film.
Recently a song was canned at A V M studios where a grandiose set resembling a bar has been erected for this purpose.
Dharani's innovative technique of filming a stunt scene along with a song was much appreciated by everyone in Dhool. A sequence in a similar pattern is said to be shot making use of the services of hundreds of dance artists, Stuntmen and atmosphere artists. Going by past record, this scene may sure to set a new trend rolling in film industry.

Savvy: Vijay has evolved his own signature style that includes emoting, acting and dancing. His future, should he become a politician, is paved with gold, for Vijay would have perfected the role with panache, in a few years’ time. He will act only in Tamil movies. He speaks only in Tamil for any interview. Why doesn’t he speak in English even in another State like Kerala?
“I don’t know English,” he answers, without batting an eyelid, when he came to Kochi for an award function Sunday last. You would think the 33-year-old actor is just in his early twenties. The ‘boy next door’ image sticks in most of his movies. With a day-old stubble and in casual jeans, Vijay does not look too enthusiastic to field questions. But then, his managers warn you that he is a shy person. But he discussed everything from Tamil cinema to his favourite actors in Indian cinema. Who are his favourite actors? Amitabh Bachchan and Madhuri Dixit!
‘Kaadhalukku Mariyadai,’ directed by Fazil, was his first major hit in 1997. Shalini had played the female lead in this movie. Vijay debuted as hero at age 18 in ‘Naalaya Theerpu.’ He has had his share of hits and flops, but Vijay takes it all in his stride. Some of his movies such as ‘Ghilli’ and ‘Thirupachi’ have been huge box office grossers while ‘Kannukkul Nilavu’ and ‘Aadhi’ bit the dust.
“I usually analyse what went wrong when a film does not do well. I do it myself and don’t take anybody’s help. I have found that people expect me to take roles which have a lot of action and some comedy. That is what they like and those kind of films have clicked,” he says.
Does that mean he will do only one kind of movies? “No, maybe once in two years or so, I will do some other kind of movie for a change, that’s all. But no movies in any other language,” he insists. Why?
“I have a problem following other languages and I don’t like my voice being dubbed,” he explains. But Vijay watches a lot of movies in all kinds of languages.
He would love to act with Mammootty and Mohanlal, but again language is the obstacle, he adds. One of the differences between Tamil and Malayalam movies, he says, is that Malayalam movies are more realistic than Tamil movies.
“It is the percentage really. Tamil films are maybe less than 50 per cent realistic while Malayalam above 50 per cent,” he elaborates. But that is how the audiences in both States want them, he is quick to add. However, some Tamil movies such as ‘Paruthiveeran,’ which was very realistic by Tamil standards did well, Vijay says.
“Tamil film industry is very healthy now, with lots of experimental and other kinds of movies,” he sums up the scene.
Directorial dreamsWhat about directorial dreams? “No no, I don’t have that mentality, it is not easy,” Vijay feels. Acting under his father’s direction was not easy as one’s parent always wants his son to do the best, but later, he got used to it. Not many actors have the privilege of having as filmy a background as Vijay’s. His father, S.A.Chandrashekharan, is a producer-director and mother, Shobha, a playback singer. Of all her songs, Vijay’s favourite is the one she sang in the movie ‘Sivakasi.’ Vijay has sung many songs for movies though he has had no formal training in music like his mother.
Acting, singing and yes, dancing. Vijay’s signature style, graceful and slow steps, mixed judiciously with fast ones, even got kudos from Prabhudeva.
“My style just developed like that. It was not deliberate. I have had no formal dance training,”
His fans call him ‘Ilayathalapathy’ and even in Kerala, he has a fans’ association which met him at the foyer of the hotel he stayed in at Kochi. The Ilayathalapathy surely has his act together, and is a ‘stylemannan’ in his own right too.

Vijay, Nayanthara rock Kochi!
It was the mother of all events in Kochi. Tamil superstar Ilayathalapathy Vijay, glamour queen of south India Nayanthara, Malayalam Megastar`s Mammootty and Mohanlal on the same stage receiving the prestigious Mathrubhumi film awards!
The crowd went berserk seeing Vijay, the most popular Tamil actor and the king among non malayalee actors in Kerala, as he lighted the traditional Kuthuvilakku in the presence of `Mathrubhumi` editor P.V Chandran and Managing director and Janatha Dal strongman Veerendra Kumar.
Later old timers were saying that they have never seen such kind of a crowd even for political meetings held at Marine Drive!
The `Mathrubhumi` event managers pulled off a coup when they had Kerala`s mass hero the one and only Mohanlal giving award to the man of the masses Vijay, while the greatest actor in Malayalam cinema, the dashing Mammootty presenting Nayanthara the south Indian glamour queen with her award.
`Mathrubhumi`, a leading Malayalam daily and one of the best known newspapers in the country, had from this year started an award for Tamil films. Nearly 37,000 people turned up at the open air Marine Drive in Kochi, to see mainly Vijay get the best actor and Nayanthara the best actress awards for Pokkiri and E respectively.

The big news at CBO this weekend is that King Khan has emerged ‘Number 1’ with his Om Shanti Om collections remaining steady in its second week thanks to multiplexes ( Sathyam, Inox and Mayajaal). Added to that the much hyped ATM collections, are going downhill, which helped OSO, to emerge as a winner in the top slot in five Chennai screens.
And the big surprise is the rise of the dark horse Dhanush’s Polladhavan, which has taken the number two slot due to good word –of-mouth. Please note that it is playing only in single screens or old complexes. It would have been the number one if it had played in multiplexes where elite audiences would have lapped it up. At Pilot in Royapettah, a single screen regularly showing dubbed English films,Polladhavan has netted a record Rs 6.45 lakhs,in its first week more than the Tamil dubbed Spiderman-3 existing record of Rs 5.85 lakhs!
Surya’s, Hari directed action family drama Vel, is not a city film so had a marginal drop but is steady and a winner due to the films collections in B and C centers, and is in the third position. Vijay-Malavika in Race Club!
Cinesouth.comIs 'Azhagiya Thamizhmagan' a success or flop? Film people and lay people are debating over the above question. Vijay himself does not seem to be unduly bothered. As usual, he remains Mr. Cool.
Vijay's shooting for 'Kuruvi' is going on at a brisk pace. Recently the shooting took place at Chennai's Race Club.
It was a duet featuring Vijay and a scantily clad Malavika. Though she is acting in 'Kattuviriyan, ' she did not hesitate to dance with Vijay for just this kuthu song in 'Kuruvi.' This song was picturised by director Dharani at the Race Club.
Whatever songs she dances for, her all time hit still remains "vaala meen...." Malavika feels this song in 'Kuruvi' may change that.

ATM dishes out something different

Ilayathalapathy Vijay has delivered something different from his usual formula films. The most refreshing thing about Azhagiya Tamil Magan, is that it combines mainstream Tamil film aesthetics with all Vijay image props. What sails the film through is its sense of humour. The gags are funny and so are the one-liners, and debutant writer – director Barathan makes it work due to smart packaging.
ATM may not be palatable to everyone, but for those who suck up this brand of humour with a straw, it’s plenty tickling. Leave your logical mind at home, crank up that sense of humour, and it’s a roller coaster ride of pure unadulterated masala. However, the director is not bothered about the story as it is wafer thin, and in the climax he just cannot fathom how to end the film.
The highlight here is that there are two Vijay’s- a good guy and the bad guy. Barathan has tried out a new format, where both the hero and the villain entertain the audiences with howlarious moments, that brings the house down. Vijay makes it work and believable as he melds effortlessly from casual sang froid to utter seriousness.
Guru (Vijay) a business management student is an ace sprinter, who lives with his friends (Santhanam and Sathyan) in a house owned by former sex- bomb Shakeela (Shakeela in a cameo as herself!) in a colony.
He is a good guy and a favourite with his friends and neighbours, and is close to his father and mother (Geeta) who lives in a village near Madurai. One day he meets Abhinaya (Shreya), a rich girl and daughter of a tycoon (Ashish Vidyarti) who slowly falls in love with him due to his good nature. After some running around, both the parents agree for their marriage.
Suddenly Guru starts seeing things that are going to happen in the immediate future! The doctors say he has Extra-Sensory Perception (ESP), and he has two bitter experiences regarding it. Just before Guru and Abhi are to be engaged, Guru gets a very disturbing ESP, of him killing Abhinaya! A shattered Guru distances himself from Abhi and goes away to Mumbai.
Meanwhile, Prasad (Vijay),a spitting image of Guru, a financier and loan shark comes to Chennai and accidentally bumps into Abhi who mistakes him for Guru! Prasad, a mercenary makes merry with Abhi and soon gets engaged to her. Meanwhile Guru sensing trouble, comes back to Chennai to save his lady love, which leads to the final twist in the climax.
The hilarious bickering and bonding between Shriya and Vijay, the scene where they first meet in the temple, stays with you. The bad guy Prasad reciting Tamil poem in college function to felicitate Guru is hilarious. Shriya has a meaty role and has as much footage as the hero and her character is the crux around which ATM revolves. She is pure eye candy and emotes sufficiently well, especially in the crucial climax scene. Santhanam as hero’s side kick is a revelation and raises the comedy bar to a new level. Ashish Vidyarti, Geeta and Ganja Karuppu has small roles.
At the centre of all this mirth is the magical Vijay in a dual role. His terrific comic timing, his ability to mock and lampoon makes his performance absolutely knockout.
In the negative character Prasad’s role he is the veritable scene stealer. He has dubbed impressively modulating his voice for both the characters, and the way he dances in the introductory title song is amazing. No two ways about it, Vijay is the heart and soul of ATM!
Count among the high points- A.R Rahman’s chic score, with the opening song Ella Puzhal…. rendered by him being the pick of the lot, the remix Ponmagal Vanthal… is an energetic song done beautifully in a studio set.
Nee Marliyn Monroe… an item number picturised on Vijay and Namitha in Phuket islands (has been butchered by the censors!) However the song that is going to be popular with the masses is the folk number Maduraikke Poggathadi, again picturised to give the Tamil nativity feel. Cinematographer Balasubramanian has been able to create breathtaking images along with stunning DI work.
The one-man entertainment troupe Vijay will make your day!

Remixes are in, and has carved a niche for itself. Filmmakers are now consciously trying to introduce remixes of old classics as item numbers in their movies and even make sure the videos are catchy enough. The recently released Polladhavan bears testimony to that fact with the `Engayum Epothum…' from Ninaithaale Innukum number, remixed by rapper Yogi B who also featured in the video, creating waves in the audio market. Since Deepavali, its videos are being aired in all TV channels and this has added to the buzz around the movie that is already on its way to become a smash hit.
Azhagiya Tamil Magan the most-expected Deepavali release also has a remix number, from the famous Sivaji classic `Pon Magal Vanthaal…' set to tune by none other than the maestro, A R Rahman, himself. This chart buster is now being aired on TV as a teaser, which has generated enough buzz among the audience, with its glitzy sets and visual effects. Remixes are in, and has carved a niche for itself. Filmmakers are now consciously trying to introduce remixes of old classics as item numbers in their movies and even make sure the videos are catchy enough. The recently released Polladhavan bears testimony to that fact with the `Engayum Epothum…' from Ninaithaale Innukum number, remixed by rapper Yogi B who also featured in the video, creating waves in the audio market. Since Deepavali, its videos are being aired in all TV channels and this has added to the buzz around the movie that is already on its way to become a smash hit.
Azhagiya Tamil Magan the most-expected Deepavali release also has a remix number, from the famous Sivaji classic `Pon Magal Vanthaal…' set to tune by none other than the maestro, A R Rahman, himself. This chart buster is now being aired on TV as a teaser, which has generated enough buzz among the audience, with its glitzy sets and visual effects. Namitha's performance in Azhagiya Tamil Magan came in for a lot of expectation from all quarters, as it was her first film with a young hero and that too someone ruling the roost at present. Though hers was just meant to be a cameo, those who saw the film felt she was not utilized to the maximum.
A few close friends called her up to advice against taking up such roles in future and tell her that the decision to act in ATM was a grave mistake. They felt she had been exploited for her glamour and nothing else.
Namitha begs to differ and thinks that it was a great opportunity to work with such a talented team of technicians and the strength of the role wasn't in her mind when she agreed to do the film. She even went on to say that the mileage she has received for this role has been impressive and has nothing to regret. Talk about having your head on your shoulders!

Storyline The hero is caught napping and his look-alike usurps his place in his lover’s heart Bottomline Surely Bharathan could have thought of a better climax!
Mind blowing footwork, well-maintained physique, interesting histrionics and uninhibited romantic interludes — Vijay lives up to the title throughout his latest offering, Swargachitra’s Azhagiya Tamizh Magan (U). At his handsome best, it’s a new avatar that the hero sports in ATM, which is a little like Uthama Puthiran modernised manifold. If after all this, the climax is a dampener you can’t blame the hero for it, can you?
Without even an iota of change in appearance, Vijay actually manages to show differences between the roles he plays as Guru and Prasad. The eyes of the villainous Vijay spew venom, and his voice modulation and manner of speaking are distinct. But as always, heroine Abhi (Shriya) is unable to spot the fake. In fact, a few other characters are inane too. Neither his friends nor his would-be pa-in-law (Ashish Vidyarthi) can distinguish between Guru and Prasad!
Who is this Prem Rakshit? The ace choreographer has done a splendid job for the song ‘Ella Pugazhum …’ The excellent execution of the dance master’s steps speaks volumes for Vijay’s skill as a dancer. The suppleness of his body is simply stunning! Together with the vibrant voice of A. R. Rahman and the lyrical lure of Vaali, the sequence is an awesome aspect of ATM. The ‘Sahana …’ (Sivaji) song-like music in the romantic moments involving Shriya, and the different arrangement (re-recording) in fight sequences are Rahman’s high points in ATM.
Guru (Vijay), an ace sprinter, and Abhi (Shriya) are lovers. Everything is hunky dory till Guru realises he has the power to foresee tragic events. The Extra Sensory Perception syndrome agonises him. And when he sees himself thrusting a knife into his beloved’s chest in the near future, he’s too scared to stay near her and moves to Mumbai. But danger lurks in the guise of Guru’s look alike, Prasad…
The svelte Shriya emotes well. Namita’s inclusion in the cast is obvious, but she vamooses midway and surfaces only at the end with a bulging tummy. She’s expecting! And instead of being livid with Prasad for her plight, she coyly tells him that it is his twins she’s bearing! You feel sorry for Vidyarthi. What is he supposed to be doing in ATM? But at least he’s not a caricature like Sayaji Shinde is made out to be! Sad that the man who played Subramanya Bharati is reduced to such clichéd roles.
Bright colour schemes dominate Maniraj’s sets. Vijay’s costume (Nalini Sriram, Rajendran) spell class. ‘Fefsi’ Vijayan’s action choreography is noteworthy and Balasubramaniam’s canning of these sequences warrants mention. Bharathan’s racy screenplay and peppy dialogue and Antony’s crisp editing help ATM speed ahead. But Bharathan gets stuck towards the end and beats a hasty retreat to take an anti-climactic course that’s thoroughly contrived.
