Dhoni’s moustache a la Vijay

In yesterday's match between Chennai Super Stars and Rajasthan Royals, M.S. Dhoni was seen sporting a moustache in line with the tradition of Tamil Nadu. Dhoni, who is usually cleanly shaved or seen sporting a five o'clock shade, was seen yesterday sporting a well-trimmed moustache, which looks exactly like the one that adorns actor Vijay's upper lip.
Maybe both discussed Tamil culture when they interacted, especially how a moustache plays a role as an indicator of bravery and Dhoni hit upon the idea of growing a moustache. But this time, he chose to follow actor Vijay's style. Earlier, Dhoni was seen sporting a horseshoe-style moustache and even a hipster.

Up North, a clean-shaved face is considered gentlemanly, though hirsute faces are more common in Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan, which share with Tamil Nadu ideas about facial hair.

In an ad too, Dhoni has a thick fake moustache, caricaturing a maverick Tamilian who issues warning to other teams in the IPL.

Stars Cheer Chennai Super Kings

IndiaGlitz
[Tuesday, April 29, 2008]

Say cricket, and there are so many people to tell you how you could have driven a ball to the boundary for a four or smashed a six. The men folk get into the mood of the game as though they are facing the ball and the women are right behind their men to cheer the winning team.

Towards the end of last week Chennai witnessed the Kinght Riders of Kolkata and the Super Kings of Chennai fighting a battle at the Chepauk grounds in Chennai. The match ended with the Chennai Super Kings wining the day's game and the crowd going crazy for their stars.

It was the first loss for Kolkata and Chennai has retained its success saga in the IPL games so far. To cheer the cricketing stars were the stars of Kollywood in full force present in the stadium. The most prominent was 'Ilayathalapathy' Vijay who watched the match with his son Sanjay.

Vijay who is very composed and silent during most of his public appearances was seen in full flow during the match. With the victory of Super Kings the actor was captured on camera dancing with his son perched on his shoulders. The other film personalities who were present to cheer their home team were Sonia Agarwal and as well as Sandhya among others.

Vijay shines in his new role

By Behindwoods News Bureau.
April 28, 2008

Ilaya Thalapathi really seems to be enjoying his new role as the brand ambassador of the Chennai Superkings. The team has been having a great run and there is no better reason to celebrate a victory. After the Superkings' victory over the Knight Riders on Saturday there was a special `click' moment that appeared in the next day's newspapers.
Vijay

Vijay standing along with the team that was (as mentioned in the newspaper) `savoring the victory'. Now, for one who really doesn't know Vijay (not you or me, maybe someone in North India or the North East) might have easily though that this guy was a part of the team, a playing member. Dressed in the yellow jersey and standing between Jacob Oram, Dhoni and Mathew Hayden, Vijay looked every inch a Chennai Superking.

He is certainly playing his role of the team's brand ambassador to perfection and if the good days continue the Chennai Superkings will be the Kings of 20-20. All the best.

Vijay's new film 'Singam'

Cinesouth.com
- 28.04.2008 Vijay

The film Vijay will be acting after 'Kuruvi' is titled as 'Singam'.

Udhayanidhi Stalin's 'Kurivi' was originally supposed to be produced by London Karunas’ Ayangaran International. At the request of Udhayanidhi to do a film for him, Vijay gave the call sheet to him that was given to London Karunas.

Now that 'Kuruvi' is complete and waiting for release, Vijay has given the call sheet to London Karunas. The film that will be directed by Prabhudeva is titled as 'Singam'.

As Nayantara lost out to Trisha in 'Pokkiri' and 'Kuruvi', Vijay has given her a chance to be his pair in this film.

The story of 'Singam' follows the commercial formula of Vijay. After this film, Vijay will do a film for M Balasubramaniam on behalf of A.V.M Studio and also a film for Udhayanidhi.

It may be recalled that a film with Vijay titled as 'Puli' to be directed by S.J Suryah was given up.

Vijay will be the sole brand ambassador for CSK

By Moviebuzz | Sunday, 27 April , 2008, 15:36

Gurunath Meiyappan of IPL's Chennai Super Kings (CSK), is a very happy man. His team is leading the tables and has clearly emerged as the favourite to grab the DLF IPL –Twenty20, inaugural 2008 cup. The way CSK demolished the highly hyped Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan's Kolkatta Knight Riders (KKR), with three overs remaining was fantastic.

Full marks to Gurunath, and the rest of the people at India Cements CSK's, franchise to make it the hottest team in the tournament. Added to that, they could whip up terrific fan frenzy for the IPL in Chennai. Hats off, that in the heat of summer CSK could attract a full house (capacity- 42,000) crowd for the clash with the Kolkotta team on Saturday evening.

So far, CSK has clicked in a big way, and all credit should be given to India Cements. The only controversy was the unceremonious termination of Nayanthara as one of the brand ambassadors of CSK. Nayanthara had said that CSK had behaved in an "unprofessional manner". She also said that "it is unethical for a corporate house to make such a statement without having the basic courtesy to inform me about the decision."

After CSK's sensational win over KKR on Saturday night, Gurunath Meiyappan of CSK sitting on the Pavilion Terrace of M.A Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai opened up and talked exclusively to Sify.com on the raging Nayanthara controversy.

The buzz in the local press is that you have signed Trisha to replace Nayanthara as CSK brand ambassador. Please comment
No way. It's pure rubbish. Let me make it clear that Mr. Vijay will be the sole brand ambassador for CSK . We are very ,very happy with him

So Vijay looks the perfect brand fit for Chennai Super Kings
You are absolutely right. Vijay is the complete professional, once he is committed to a project. The man has done more for CSK than he committed. He moved around as a part of the team, cancelled his shoot and came to the stadium to watch our players at the nets. Dhoni and Vijay get along very well. The star has promised to hold a sneak preview of his "Kuruvi" for Dhoni on May 1, a day before our match against Delhi Daredevils in Chennai. Vijay was there with his family for both the matches in Chennai, and may also come to Bangalore to cheer for us on Monday (April 28) when we play Royal Challengers.

CSK seems to be rocking?
Yes. In every aspect of acquiring the team, its performance, on field entertainment and the kind of ratings we managed to pull off. We have proved that CSK is a professionally run team. We are rocking!

It’s been five days since the start of the inaugural Indian Premier League and cricket lovers across the world have witnessed a heady mix of the game and loads of glamour. If players like Mike Hussey and Brendon McCullum have won over the fans of their respective sides, stars like Shah Rukh Khan and Preity Zinta have lent the filmi touch, making the billion dollar event potently explosive.

Tamil star Vijay (left) with Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni

And now it’s the turn of Tamil actor Vijay to join the bandwagon in front of his home crowd when Chennai Super Kings take on Mumbai Indians at the Chepauk today. Vijay is being touted as the next superstar of the Tamil film industry and enjoys tremendous fan following among the movie going crowd here.

“It will be really interesting to watch Kings play the Indians. The IPL has attracted a vast audience and I will be rooting for Dhoni and his men,” said the star ambassador of the Chennai outfit. He's already bowled over by the easy going nature of Indian ODI skipper MS Dhoni and is looking forward to memorable experience with him while the tournament is on. “Dhoni is a super star and a humble person. Meeting him was a great experience. I am eager to interact with him in the coming days also,” he added.

Vijay and Shahrukh Khan dictate terms!

Tamilstar.com

Nope, it isn’t the box office performance we intend here. While the ticket counters are enjoying a forced vacation of sorts, IPL matches are dictating terms with skyrocketing TRP rates on television. And brand ambassadors Vijay and Shahrukh Khan couldn’t ask for more with the teams they endorse reaping success after success.

While Vijay endorses the Chennai Super Kings, Shahrukh owns and endorses the Knight Riders (Kolkatta) team. Of the matches held so far, Shahrukh’s Knight Riders won the matches played against Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab. Chennai Super Kings brought home the matches against Deccan Chargers and Royal Challengers.

Ilayathalapathy Vijay is all excited as he dons a new role as Chennai Super Kings (CSK) brand ambassador.
/photo.cms?msid=2972725

Speaking exclusively to Chennai Times on the sets of his forthcoming Kuruvi, at Prasad Studios, where he is doing some patchwork for the film, the actor says: “The two big Cs in my life from the time I can remember is cinema and cricket and I grew up watching them in theatres and on television.

I was passionate about the game, especially ODIs, so I’m more than happy to endorse Twenty20 and CSK.” No surprises when Vijay bats for MS Dhoni, captain, Chennai Super Kings. “My son loves watching cricket on television, he is a fan of MS Dhoni and is waiting to meet him and have himself photographed with him.” Vijay not just loves cricket but has played college level cricket as well!

Prod him further on Dhoni, and the superstar says he is fascinated by Dhoni’s captaincy, which he feels got India the Cup in the recent Australian tour. “Dhoni is an inspirational leader and has been fantastic as captain. I will be there at MA Chidambaram Stadium to cheer for him and the team,” he adds.

The actor’s presence at the stadium will guarantee a full house. He’s known to pull in the punters. The first time Vijay met Dhoni was at the official launch of CSK — a glitzy affair at the Chennai Trade Centre auditorium. “We will win it for Chennai was CSK captain Dhoni’s first comment to me when we met there. He told me that he has heard of me and said that he loves the way I dance in my films. He was very frank and came across as a down-to- earth sort of guy.”

A little bird informs us that Team Super Kings is expected to catch a sneak preview of Vijay’s upcoming release Kuruvi. Never mind Dhoni’s self-confessed love for Bollywood. We’d love to see the Ranchi trailblazer match steps with the superhero. In fact, rumour has it that the cricketer even asked the actor how he managed to do the difficult steps in the ATM title song!

Team CSK managers have taken the popular line — Unnal Mudiyum Thozha —from the song and made it their war cry! Vijay is gung-ho about the current form of CSK. “Obviously our strength is our awesome batting line-up. The way they performed against Kings XI Punjab, and thrashed Lee, Sreesanth and Pathan all round the turf was amazing. The finest left handers in the world — Hayden, Hussey and Fleming — bat for us and I think Murali is the best spinner at the moment. Dhoni’s shrewd captaincy along with youngsters from Tamil Nadu can get us the Cup,” says an excited Vijay.

The actor is all padded up to sit in the special enclosure, cheering every ball that the home team hits. “The T20 is here to stay, and it is as racy, entertaining and enjoyable as the movies I do,” he chuckles.

When quizzed on whether IPL could possibly gnaw at the summer box-office collections, Vijay quips, “T20 will not affect box-office collections. A well-made commercial film will rake in the moolah anyway. Do you think I’d have supported IPL had it threatened cinema? Kuruvi is slated for release on May 1, bang in the middle of the IPL season. I’m confident that this roller-coaster entertainer is well made and will draw in the crowds.”

A test of sorts for IPL

ROOTING FOR CHENNAI: Chennai Super Kings brand ambassador actor Vijay at a news conference in the M.A.Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Tuesday. The host will play Mumbai Indians in its first IPL match at home on Wednesday.

Chennai: A city that has savoured cricket’s uniqueness in an erstwhile era will witness the game’s condensed future on Wednesday.

The Indian Premier League Twenty20 series has set foot in many Indian cities, but its biggest challenge lies in convincing cricket’s keenest observers of its purpose. The big question now: Will entertainment for its own sake appeal to Chennai’s cricket lovers?

The agenda for Wednesday is clear. Much before loyalties are sorted out for Chennai Super Kings vs Mumbai Indians, the paying public will be forewarned of the IPL’s essence, with performances by Sivamani and Hariharan, and the presence of brand ambassadors Vijay and Nayanthara.

The idea of entertainment can ill afford to lose itself in the cricket. Entertainment in its different forms has been well-received in the city, but its impact when combined with sport will be put to test through the course of the seven matches here. Independent of the glitz and the glamour, the cricket has to draw crowds.

Former cricketer V.B. Chandrasekhar, Director, Cricketing Activities, of Chennai Super Kings, was quite confident of Chennai’s appetite for entertaining cricket.

He said: “They will definitely like what they’re going to be seeing. The cable system here has prevented many people from watching the matches on TV, but we’re expecting them at the Ground. The people of Chennai have always enjoyed entertaining cricket.

I remember the time when Krish Srikkanth and I used to bat here. People would throng to watch him and disappear once he got out. There’s always an audience here for entertaining cricket.”

Popular actor Vijay, who addressed a press conference here on Tuesday, was equally excited. “I am looking forward to the matches, since I belong to a family of cricket lovers. I’m sure my fans will come to watch,” said the brand ambassador.

M.S. Dhoni, substituting for the lack of a home-grown icon player, will need all his resources as captain to cultivate loyalty.

No cricketer from the city has matched Srikkanth’s international stature since his retirement.

For Chennai to support and identify itself with a hybrid team that is meant to be its but with no local star, nothing short of cricketing excellence will do.

Actor Vijay, Dhoni form mutual admiration society

MUTUAL ADMIRATION: Dhoni and Vijay are full of praise for each other.

MUTUAL ADMIRATION: Dhoni and Vijay are full of praise for each other.

Chennai: The Chennai Superkings take on Mumbai Indians on Wednesday and among those who'll be watching it keenly is IPL Chennai's brand ambassador, actor Vijay.

It also looks as though the Superkings skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Vijay have found a fan in each other.

"Definitely all my fans will come – they are all cricket lovers too so they'll definitely come and cheer the team. Besides my support, the team will also have my fans' support," Vijay enthused.

For his part, Dhoni is full of praise for his team’s brand ambassador.

"He's a great guy,” said Dhoni. “I've met him just once during the launch function. It'll be interesting to know him better and of course the film industry here too – that'll be a relaxing time.”

Vijay returns the compliment twofold.

"Dhoni's a superstar, I don't know about myself," he quipped.

"Before I met him, I was feeling like, ‘I was gonna meet a big cricket captain, but he was so down-to-earth. He said, ‘Hey I know you, I've seen you on TV’, and he made me feel so very comfortable."

Watch the video

As for films, looks like they will have to wait because there's something else on top of Vijay's mind.

"I saw the Mohali match. We've taken 250 runs which no other team's got so far – ours is a strong team that can win under any circumstances – my mind's totally in tomorrow's match," he said.

With the actor there to cheer his team, Wednesday's match should be a double delight for all Vijay fans.

When stars descend at Chepauk

[Wednesday, April 23, 2008]

The M A Chidambaram Stadium had a surprise visitor on Tuesday. 'Ilaya Thalapathy' Vijay, the brand ambassador for Chennai Super Kings Team, made it to the stadium to cheer the local team.

After exchanging plesantries with Dhoni, Vijay addressed the media. Speaking on the occasion, he said, 'Dhoni is a super human being. I admire his cricketing skills. I was moved when he said that he had seen my films and songs on television.'

Vijay assured that he would be on the stadium on 23, 26 April and 2 May to watch the proceedings live and express his support for Chennai Super Kings. 'My participation in the rest of the matches is based on my movie commitments'. Nayantara, the other star ambassador is expected to join Vijay at M A Chidambaram Stadium on 23 April.

Meanwhile, the IPL matches in Chennai will witness special music concerts by renowned singers and musicians besides cheer girls dancing all the way. A host of VIPs including Chief Minister M Karunanidhi and who's who of Tamil film industry are expected to watch the match on Wednesday.

Shankar Mahadevan, Anuradha Sreeram, Karthik among others are expected to perform before the IPL matches at Chepauk.

Dhoni, Vijay – mutual admiration

Chennai, April 22: The mutual admiration between Mahendra Singh Dhoni and cine star Vijay could not have been more apparent and seemingly genuine as the two spoke of one another in glowing terms, each calling the other the “super star”.

Dhoni, captain of the Chennai Super Kings and Vijay, its Star Ambassador, met the Media separately, here today and said they admired each other’s status.

Dhoni said of Vijay: “He is a real crowd-puller and a super star. It was a privilege meeting him.”

On his part, Vijay confessed to being overawed by Dhoni’s personality and in every sense he was the real super star.

“What can I say about Dhoni? When we first met during the launch last month, I was pleasantly surprised when he told me that he liked the way I danced and also had seen my song sequences on the television. I am a great admirer of Dhoni and him being the captain of our country’s team, the privilege was all mine to have met him,” Vijay gushed.

When asked about his interest in cricket, Vijay said: “I have always been a huge fan of cricket. Of course, like any other kid, I also played cricket. All my family members are cricket fans. So, it’s quite natural for me to be associated with the sport even if as a Star Ambassador. But for me, there is only one Super Star here, and that is Dhoni.”

Vijay said he would try to be present for all of Super Kings’ home matches at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. “I will have to rework my shooting schedule, but I will definitely try to attend all our matches here and cheer for my team,” he reiterated.

In a lighter vein, Vijay, replying to a query, said he would definitely take up a project with cricket as a theme. On persistent questioning whether he would have Dhoni in the film, Vijay simply laughed.

Chennai cheers for Gilli and Hussey

Loud cheers for Michael Hussey in Chennai, but who is this new Gilli?

Gilli, but not Adam: As you walk down from the Madras Cricket Club gate to the media entrance, there are dozens of posters on lamp posts and walls. All of them feature a young man in various smiling poses.
This is Vijay, matinee idol for a new Tamil generation. His biggest hit was called Gilli and we're reliably informed that it has nothing to do with the greatest wicketkeeper-batsman of all time.

Superstar vs Superstar

Amol Karhadkar, KR Guruprasad , Hindustan Times
April 23, 2008

Chennai team star ambassador Vijay is no stranger to press conferences. But for journalists from outside Tamil Nadu, it was surprising to see the humility with which the Tamil actor spoke to the media. He even stood up to answer the questions but was told by the journalists to sit down.

He did not, however, answer when asked if he would ever want Dhoni to play any of the roles in his movie. But he said that he has met Dhoni once and the cricketer apparently told him that he had seen the actor a couple of times on TV.

Dhoni on his part said that Vijay was humble and hoped to catch up with other Tamil actors and stars later on during the IPL. In the end Vijay was asked if he was big enough to pull in the crowd he said, “Well, I don’t know, but we have Dhoni who is also a superstar.”

For those alien to the Tamil film world, Vijay is arguably the biggest star here after Rajnikanth and Kamal Hassan.

Dhoni appreciates me - Vijay turns emotional

It is a healthy practice for cricket stars to enjoy films and film stars to woo cricket players. In that respect, Indian captain Dhoni and actor Vijay exchanged appreciations for each other.

Vijay is a brand ambassador for the Chennai Superkings team in the 20-20 tournament. Tonight Chennai Superkings will play a match at the Chepauk grounds. Meeting the media on this occasion, Vijay spoke about Dhoni's appreciation. “His game has taken gigantic proportions in global cricket. I was curiously excited when I had the opportunity to meet him. Those are unforgettable moments.
Dhoni

When he met me, he listed my films that he enjoyed. He also sang from memory the lyrics of the dance number I had done. Being a player with a star status, Dhoni was simple and affectionate without putting on airs. I am very happy for the healthy friendship between us," said Vijay in total appreciation of Dhoni.

Dhoni was also present at this meet.

Chennai Super Kings assistant coach, V.B. Chandrasekhar, described the team as a group of “fearless entertainers.”

K. Srikkanth, the brand ambassador of the Chennai Super Kings, explained why he was the perfect man to represent the team. “As a player I never lasted more than 20 overs. Did I?” the former India captain said.

M.S. Dhoni, the skipper of the team, said he is proud to lead a young team. “Our ultimate aim is to win the Trophy,” he said unveiling the team apparel whose sponsor is Reebok.

Chennai, March 29: “We will win it for Chennai,” declared Mahendra Singh Dhoni, captain of the Chennai Super Kings cricket team. India’s ODI captain who is Chennai’s star catch for the Indian Premier League, was presented by India Cements at a glitzy ceremony featuring splendid entertainment in the city on Saturday evening.

Responding to the master of ceremony’s comment about there being veterans in the team, Dhoni said emphatically that Twenty-20 cricket is all about youth and to win the IPL for his adopted city would anyway be his main aim after the series against South Africa got over. The team’s star ambassador, actor Vijay, talked of how ‘Captain Cool’ had won limited-overs matches in crunch situations for India by instilling confidence in his players and said that he would do the same for the IPL franchise.

The other star ambassador, Nayanthara, also said that to win the first edition of the cup would be the finest gift Dhoni could give the Tamil film industry. Having made time in the midst of a Test match to be at the launch, Dhoni spoke only a few words while the high octane entertainment laid out for the evening captured all the attention with performances from an array of entertainers ranging from singer Vasundhara Das and dancer Reema Sen to a laser artist who stole the show combining optical special effects with athletic juggling. The show, put together by the franchise owner India Cements, team sponsor Aircel and apparel supplier Reebok at the Chennai Trade Centre held a large audience spellbound.

Dhoni, who came up on stage on a chair lift, was the major star present at the team introduction in which players came up in categories of cricket specialization. None of the foreign players were present, which came as a disappointment. Of those signed on from abroad, Kepler Wessels, the coach, who is at the India-South Africa Test as a television expert, was there to absorb a bit of Tamil cinema culture. The brand ambassador Krish Srikkanth had those present in stitches with his brand of earthy humour.

The Chennai Super Kings begin their IPL programme with a match on April 18 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata against Knight Riders while their first home game will be on April 24 at the Chidambaram Stadium.

Vijay shakes his leg for cricket

IndiaGlitz [Friday, March 28, 2008]

What happens when cricket weds cinema? Obviously more charm, fan-fare and glamour. It’s precisely what the Chennai IPL team – Chennai Super Kings has ventured to achieve.

After appointing ‘super hero’ Vijay and glam doll Nayantara as their brand ambassadors, the team is planning to shoot an anthem featuring the two in a bid to promote the team among the common-man.

To be assisted by cinematographer – director Rajeev Menon, the anthem would have musical score by Mani Sharma, who had rendered several chartbusters in Vijay films before.

To be shot soon, the anthem would also feature some players playing the team which includes the likes of M S Dhoni, Muthiah Muralitharan and Mathew Hayden among others.

Meanwhile, Nayantara expressing her delight appointed as brand ambassador for the IPL team, said, ‘I enjoy cricket. Been to cricket matches before and I follow cricket score even when I shoot. I admire Dhoni, who will be playing for Chennai Super Kings and of course the fast bowler from our God’s Own Country Sreesanth’.
