A grand set is being put up in a Chennai studio for Vijay's film 'Azhagiya Thamizh Magan.' A surprise element in this film is the bunch of comedians.

Vijay is riding high on the success of 'Pokkiri.' He now wants his action film 'Azhagiya Thamizh Magan' to do better than 'Pokkiri.' A lot of importance is being given to comedy in the film.

The comedy team includes Santhanam, Sathyan, M.S. Bhaskar and others. The trend of putting up grand sets for Vijay's films started with 'Thirumalai. ' Films like 'Thirumalai' and 'Gilli' which featured grand sets were super hits.

It's not clear if it is this sentiment or if the scenes really demand it that is behind grand sets for 'Azhagiya Thamizh Magan.' This will include a hospital, shopping complex, police station and so on, that will look like a prominent locality in Chennai.

Trisha returns as Vijay's heroine!

It looks as if Trisha is getting real serious about her career in Tamil.

In the year 2006, Trisha was the busiest and leading heroine of Tollywood. Telugu films were also her priority. Chiranjeevi' s film 'Stalin' firmly established her as a force to reckon with in Telugu. She also is the heroine of director Selvaraghavan' s debut film in Telugu with Venkatesh.

But the year 2007 is shaping up to be the year of Kollywood for Trisha. She began the year by walking out of Nagarjuna's 'Don'. She accepted a Tamil film with Vishaal in the lead. Now it looks as if she'll soon be formally announced as the heroine of Tamil actor Vijay's new film.

Vijay's career had hit a slump. But he has now bounced back with 'Pokiri'. Trisha is one of his lucky heroines and he is only too glad to repeat her in his film.

Trisha's decision to shift her attention to Tamil is a smart one because lately, almost everybody from Tamil is concentrating on Telugu. Ever since Jyothika vacated the No 1 slot in Tamil, there still is no leading heroine in Tamil. In Tollywood, an intense competition is on among atleast half a dozen heroines.

Pokkiri rules and is the clear number one by a mile! Its hold over the CBO is amazing. In its third weekend, the film is still drawing 95 percent! At number two this week is the multi starrer Salaam-E-Ishq, which opened in four huge screens with combined capacity of over 4500 and by day two started dropping. In comparison Mani Ratnam's Guru is still the hottest show in town, and is steady at 85 to 90 percent during this weekend.

Dhanush's Thiruvilayadal Aarambham continues to rock, and has become a favourite with the family audience. Though GK films have boosted the publicity of Thamarabharani, it has not reflected in the collections and is at number five.

Scaling heights with `Pokkiri'

Another race, another victory! At the moment Vijay is basking in the joy of winning with his new film.

Vijay's victory saga continues. And when you meet him at the commodious room in his home in Neelankarai, Chennai, a week after the release of `Pokkiri,' his smug smile conveys this much. "After `Aadhi' in January last, I had no release till `Pokkiri.' For nearly six months I was listening to stories but none appealed. That's when I got to watch the Telugu `Pokkiri.' I felt it would work. Now reports are coming in that it has. The year has started off well," smiles Vijay. The actor rarely smiles, but when he does his eyes light up. You can't expect constant chirpiness in your conversation with Vijay. He's quite the serious kind.

As far as choosing a script goes, Vijay's criterion is simple. "Some element in it should stir a chord in me. If it does I'm game. Call it instinct or hunch, the truth is, it has worked for me most of the time," he says. But for a Vijay film `Aadhi' can't be termed a huge success. Unruffled by the poser (in fact, throughout the exchange the actor maintains a calm maturity that belies his age), Vijay leans forward to explain, "I agree. That's because my two earlier projects [`Thiruppachi' and `Sivakasi'] were massive hits." So was `Gilli.' "Yeah! Distributors have been calling me up to say that for them `Pokkiri' is like a double `Gilli.' But in all fairness you can't compare the two films now. `Pokkiri' is just out."

Prabhu Deva has re-entered the Tamil arena in a director's garb with `Pokkiri.' Responds Vijay: "I was very much taken in by the way he had made his first Telugu film, `Nuvostanante Naenodhantana' (`Unakkum Enakkum' in Tamil) So as soon as we decided on the remake of `Pokkiri,' the first name that came to my mind was Prabhu Deva. We approached him and he agreed."

Doesn't he intend getting out of the action formula? "No. Mine is the commercial route. But once in a while, if I get a project like `Kadhalukku Mariyaadhai,' I'd love to do it," he explains.

Under Deva's direction

It took Vijay just three days of work to find his footing with Prabhu Deva.

"I understood what he expected and the sync was perfect. He's quite a perfectionist. He would patiently explain, act out and go on goading you till he got what he wanted, but would never upset the mood of the actors," smiles Vijay.

On the amazing dance skills of Prabhu Deva, Vijay says: "He's so good that I was kind of nervous ... He choreographed one song. He knew my strong points in dance and devised steps accordingly. He was around when we shot other songs too, improvising here and there. Even in the fights, he suggested effective changes."

`Pokkiri' is Vijay's second film with Asin, after `Sivakasi.' "She's a natural actor and her underplay is superb. She would absorb what the director says and come out with the right reactions without overdoing things. I think it's so with many of the actors from Kerala."

Generally heroines in Vijay's films have little to do. "Not so. Just watch `Pokkiri,'" he interrupts.

Ask him about his favourite leading ladies in his films, he pauses for just a moment: "Trisha and Asin. I like Trisha's cute expressions in song sequences in films such as `Unakkum Enakkum.' She doesn't stop with mere movements," he adds.

Vadivelu provides the humour angle in `Pokkiri.' "He plays a kung fu master. His attire with that weird hairstyle had us in splits every time he entered the sets," Vijay laughingly recalls. "The track was entirely Prabhu Deva's idea. The Telugu version did not have it."

Vijay seems to have a penchant for Mani Sharma's music — `Shahjahan,' `Youth' and now `Pokkiri.' "Yes. Even his racy numbers have a touch of melody. And it is melody that sustains a song. We've not taken any of the songs from Telugu. Including the re-recording, Mani composed fresh for us,"

Vijay's next project is `Azhagiya Thamizh Magan,' produced by Appachan, (of `Friends' fame), and directed by Dharani's associate Bharathan. The heroine is Shriya.

Is `Pokkiri' an image-boosting exercise for the hero whom a recent TV survey projects as the next `superstar'? "I rate it as my best commercial film so far. [Of course, it's a matter of opinion.] Nothing has been thrust into `Pokkiri' for effect. And when they talk about this survey made from among the public, it makes me feel more responsible. It inspires me to give my fans my best in return for the confidence they have in my potential," says Vijay.

What's the secret of Vijay's success?

The actor is very simple. He says, "I just do what the audience expects from me. I don't experiment too much on the screen. What comes naturally I do it".

The actor has a fan-following not just among the youngsters but also the children and womenfolk in the State.

Says Vijay, "I just go the way MGR went. Go by instincts in picking my stories. The good or bad does not affect me personally".

Encouraged by the success of 'Pokkiri,' Vijay is all ready to start work on his next project. It is an original Tamil film titled 'Azhagiya Thamizh Magan.'

The film is being directed by Bharathan, who has assisted Dharani in 'Gilli' as well as other films. This is Bharathan's first film as a director.

Bharathan had written the dialogues for 'Gilli.' Vijay had liked the story Bharathan had narrated to him then and went on to give his call sheet for the film. The shooting starts today.

The film is produced by Appachan's Swargachitra. During 'Friends,' Appachan had asked for Vijay's call sheet as well as given him advance for the next project. What started a few years ago, finally finds fruit in 'Azhagiya Thamizh Magan' now.

After 'Udaya,' AR Rehman composes music for Vijay's film now. Camera is by Balasubramaniam. Anthony does the film coortdination and Fefsi Vijayan composes the stunt scenes.

Bharathan has a proper script in place and is starting shooting with firm ideas. So it could well be that 'Azhagiya Thamizh Magan' will also be a competitor for 'Sivaji' and 'Dasavataram' !

Vijay in and as ATM!

The shoot of Vijay's new film Azhagiya Tamizh Magan (ATM) starts today (24 Jan) in Chennai. But our hero is chilling out in New York with some close friends. He will join the shoot on January 31, after he comes back to Chennai.

The film is directed by Bharathan, long time Dharani's right hand man and a good script writer. Balasubramaniam is the cameraman, FEFSI Vijayan who has come in for praise from Vijay for his work in Pokkiri, is going to be the action director. And the highlight is A.R. Rahman's five lilting tunes.

Vijay is being paired for the first time with Shriya while Namitha plays a cameo. ATM is going to be a different kind of movie, something which Vijay has not done before. He plays a character that has a negative streak in him. Says Vijay: "If you ask me who the villain in the film is, well my character himself is "the villain". ATM otherwise will be a typical Vijay film with all essential
entertainment ingredients. "

"Swargachitra" Appachan, the one time leading Malayalam producer who has made Friends with Vijay more than six years back is the producer of the film. Actually Appachan was to start the film nearly two years back, but somehow it never materialized.

Vijay has given bulk dates to Bharathan to complete the film. Since he comes from the Dharani School of direction, he is sure to take more than 100 days to shoot the film. As of now ATM is scheduled to release on August 15, 2007.

While still basking in the glory of his massive hit Pokiri, Vijay has started working in his next, Azhagiya Tamil Magan. This film has two heroines, Shreya Saran and Namitha. Swargachitra Appachan is the producer of this film.

Azhagiya Tamil Magan, directed by Bharathan, has music by AR Rahman and cinematography by Balasubramaniam, who won accolades for his cinematography in Pithamagan and M Kumaran Son of Mahalakshmi.

It should be noted that Bharathan is a famed dialogue writer who has proved his talent in director Dharani's films.

No wonder then, that director Dharani was among the first to arrive at the venue where the film had its muhurat and started rolling. The other celebrities spotted at the function were AM Rathnam, directors SA Chandrasekharan, Perarasu, Jayam Raja, Ramana, actor Jayam Ravi, the film's lead female stars Shreya and Namitha and Vijay's wife Sangeetha.

After the formal muhurat, the film started rolling.

VijayThe stories are not different; the get-ups are not different; no film is different from the other. Despite that, Vijay's films continue to work well and that in itself is a difference.

We asked Vijay about this.

"Please don't make me out to be some Thomas Alva Edison who has discovered a success formula," said a jovial Vijay in a departure from his usual reticent behavior. "Such a formula has been followed from MGR's times to make a film a commercial success. When this makes everyone happy, it strikes me that this formula is not bad at all.

The Puratchi Thalaivar followed this formula and I'm following his way. I am for it, so I don't intend to change route needlessly. I choose the story according to my mindset. Though most of my films become hits because of that, sometimes it just does not work. But I don't break my head about why this or that happened."

He's indeed clear in his thoughts!

Azhagiya Tamizh Magan kick starts

Azhagiya Tamil Magan – Vijay’s next venture – has kick started in AVM studios without much fanfare and most importantly sans Vijay. The Pooja, held at the Ganesha shrine inside AVM studios, was attended by S.A. Chandrasekhar, Sangeetha – Vijay’s spouse, Shreya, Namita, A.M. Ratnam, Jeyam Ravi, Dharani, Ramana, and Kanja Karuppu.

This could well be the first time Vijay’s movie has been Poojaed without his presence. Sources from Vijay stable stated that the actor is currently holidaying in the US.Namita and Shreya, emblazoned in body hugging outfits, graced the occasion and made few heads turn.

Namita’s glistening tank top embossed with smooching kids made a fashion statement.
Shreya was not too far behind from Namita with her sleeveless green tee and a long pencil skirt with glasswork. Shreya’s attire was complete with the multihued cloth handbag that she wore across her shoulders.

Produced by Appachan for Swargachitra films, the movie is directed by Bharathan – who was Dharani’s assistant – and the music scored by A.R. Rahman. Balasubramanian takes care of the cinematography.

Mega hit in Kerala!

Our Ilayathalapati Vijay's Pokkiri has taken a better opening than Baba Kalyani Mohanlal's last release in Tiruvananthapuram, the bastion and home town of the Malayalam Superstar!

In Thiruvananthapuram, Mohanlal's Baba Kalyani grossed Rs 13,60, 550 in a week from Sreekumar and Sreevisakh theatres while Vijay's Pokkiri grossed an awesome Rs 14,10,240 Lakhs in a week from Anjali and Athulya theatres ! At Ernakulam Shenoys, it has grossed nearly Rs 10 Lakhs in its first week.

The buzz is that Pokkiri is doing better business in Kerala than any other Tamil films in recent times. All Malayalam films released this year has not been able to match Pokkiri collections.

It is a nerve-wracking drive to Vijay's house in Neelankarai, with traffic crawling, especially near Thiruvanmiyur bus stand, but meeting the actor makes it worth the while.

All the more since I land up with a lot of comments, questions and criticisms from his fans and viewers. Dressed in a pair of capris, his hair all tousled up, since he has just spent time playing with his son Sanjay and daughter Sasha, Vijay gamely takes the hot seat. Excerpts.

How is Pokkiri doing?

The film exhibitors are very happy that the film is doing well and fans appear to like it a lot.

you used to look so fresh in other films. Why do you look dull in Pokkiri?

It was a deliberate decision to avoid looking like a duplicate of the original (in Telugu). Prabhu Deva (the director) told me I should underplay everything. Even if a bomb goes off near me, I should not over react, he felt. I had my doubts for the first two days, but after that I was convinced.

Somehow you do not seem to be the Vijay we see in his usual formula movie. You look hot with Asin though.

Ya, thanks. Heard so from others as well. Pokkiri is very much what my fans like.

you have played a cop, but why is there so much violence?

I agree there is violence till the 10th reel, but that has to be shown to justify what follows later — how the wicked are punished.

Do you really think there is so much violence in life?

In real there is much more, at least that is the image you form when you read what is published in the papers.

Will you venture into offbeat films?

Don't know what people expect of me. (Laughs) But I will not do anything offbeat.

you are normally well dressed in your films. But in Pokkiri your colour combination (too bright) smacks of Telugu films.

This is the first time I am hearing of it. Everyone has praised the film and said it has been adapted for me quite well. The only original part is the 20-minute encounter between Nasser and Prakash Raj and that is my personal favourite.

Comment on roles like Jeeva in E or Prashanth's in Adaikalam.

I know films like Mahanadhi and Moonram Pirai are eternal hits, but I feel my films should be jolly to act and to watch.

so you will not do a Krrish?

I am not saying that. Films like Krrish and Superman have a universal appeal. I would love to do a Krrish but it should be made with a very huge budget. Only then will it work with the audience.

Vishal. Does it bother you that he has come up very fast, in your mould?

It is not just my style. I myself followed in Rajni's wake, and he followed someone else. Vishal has a long-standing promising future. New stars work very hard, and in today's life everything works fast. However, I do work on what I need to do to retain my position.

Azhagiya Tamizh Magan starts rolling today

Vijay's next movie Azhaghiya Tamizh Magan starts today. The movie is being produced by Appachan under the Swargachitra banner. Bharathan directs the movie. Other details are not yet available.

The title of the movie looks very different and does not give any clue as to what the movie is all
about. If the shooting, that starts today gains momentum and maintains it, then we can expect a mid-summer release for the movie. One cannot see the movie release on Tamil New year's day or being stretched till Deepavali. So, it looks more like an off-season release.

Vijay is all upbeat after the good response to Pokkiri. He had been a bit low after what happened to Aadhi. But, a lot of work put into Pokkiri helped and the movie is now rocking theaters. Vijay, without taking any break, has immediately consented to join the sets of Azhagiya Tamizh Magan. This shows that he is in high spirits and eager to extend his good run. The Pongal winner

Vijay's "Pokkiri", one of the releases this Pongal, has done well at the box-office. The film is a super hit in Tamil Nadu and Kerala and featured in the U.K. top 20 for its impressive opening.

Says Vijay: "The first time I saw the Telugu version, I knew the subject had a universal appeal. If you had noticed, I was influenced by Mahesh Babu's body language and mannerisms. I sported a new look — that of a king — for the first time in one of the songs, thanks to Prabhu Deva."

He says the credit for the success of the film goes to Prabhu who has packaged it well. Added to that Mani Sharma's music is foot tapping. Producer Boney Kapoor is now going to remake "Pokkiri" in Hindi with Salman Khan as the hero and Prabhu Deva as the director!

A few unfavorable rumours floated about 'Pokkiri' but the film has overshot all that and triumphed and this has made Vijay very happy.

He is forever thrashing rowdies…the film is full of bloodshed…there are many such faults found in 'Pokkiri.' Despite that, 'Pokkiri' has made fantastic box office collections.

Speaking about it, Vijay says happily, "They said there is too much violence in the film. They said not many women saw the film. But that is not so. Women came in droves to see 'Pokkiri' with their families."

Vijay also said that distributors and theater owners in all centres have expressed satisfaction at how well the film was doing.

Vijay's next project is 'Azhagiya Thamizh Magan' directed by Bharathan, an assistant of Dharani. Shriya and Namitha are his two heroines. Shooting is scheduled to start next month.

In his first ever interview after the success of the film, he met Moviebuzz, at his seaside villa, in Neelankarai on the East Coast Road in Chennai. Totally dedicated to his work and family, he is all smiles as he speaks about Pokkiri success. Excerpts So you are off for a holiday? Yes I’ve been working for the last eight months without a break and we are going to New York for a small break. I’ve plenty of relatives and friends over there and we’re planning to just chill out. You have bounced back with Pokkiri turning out to be a super hit. Please comment (Smiles) Porattamae Ithukku than (All this hard work is for this) I am glad that all the hard work has paid off. The film is not only a super hit but it’s being appreciated by everyone. How do you normally get feedback from public? Well, I have people to give me feedbacks and reports. Initially I heard that ladies do not like the first half as they feel there is too much violence but after the first two days the report completely changed and the very same people started appreciating it after they realized that there is a reason for all that killings. They say that the highlights are the action, songs and Vadivel comedy. But you worked for maximum number of days for Pokkiri? Yes I shot for nearly 145 days more than what I did for Ghilli. Prabhu Deva is a perfectionist and he takes time for each shot composition. I knew that he was doing a good job and gave him a free hand. He is passionate about his work and is a creator who needs time. What according to you worked magic for the film? For me, the first time I saw the Telugu version, I knew that I was doing the remake. The story had a universal appeal and if you had noticed I was so influenced by Mahesh Babu’s body language and mannerisms that I have used it in the film. Personally I feel that it was the love scenes with Asin, my confrontation scenes with Prakash Raj, Vadivelu’s comedy and above all the well choreographed action scenes by Fefsi Vijayan that were the highlights. But now the industry is raving about that terrific on-screen chemistry between you and Asin… Yes.. all the credit goes to Prabhu Deva. There was a lot of positive vibes on the sets and he made us comfortable on the sets. Moreover, compared to all my earlier films there were lot of love scenes in Pokkiri which was shot beautifully by Prabhu notably the lift scene. What about Prakash Raj? (Laughs) He is my lucky villain. Our combination in Ghilli, Sivakasi and now Pokkiri has clicked. I think the audiences like our on-screen chemistry which has a comic streak. Even Nassar has done a great job in the film and if you ask me, I would say that the scene in the climax with Nassar and Prakash is one of my personal favourites. It had a lot of emotions and worked well with the audiences. Tell us about the songs in Pokkiri? Again, my combination with Mani Sharma in films like Shajahan and Youth have been hits. Now the credit for Pokkiri numbers turning into hits is that there was a lot of variety and the picturisation was good. The Tamil..Tamil.. song choreographed by Raju Sundaram and Dole..Dole.. by Prabhu Deva (he did only that) were the pick of the album. My introductory song is also being appreciated by my fans. How big a hit is Pokkiri? Did you expect this? It will be one of my biggest hits. In NSC area the distributor Oscar Ravichandran called me up and said that it’s a super duper hit and overseas it has featured in UK Top 20. In Kerala, the film is a super hit and is breaking all existing records. What more can I ask for? For me, I work with the same passion for all my films. For Pokkiri everything fell into place and I thank all my fans and well-wishers for this success. What is your next film? I am starting Azgagiya Tamizh Magan from February first week. Shriya will be the heroine and Namitha is there in a cameo role. The film is directed by Bharathan and has music by A.R Rahman.

Namitha turns down other offers for Vijay

With Pokkiri hitting the bull’s eye, Vijay is geared up for his next project Azhagiya Tamil Magan. Photo session of ATM is proposed to be held in the near future with Vijay, Shreya, and Namitha.

Whilst on the subject, Namitha seems to be resisting other offers to keep herself free for ATM.

With her Neelakanda in Kannada becoming a hit, the actress is much sought after these days in Kannada industry. However, to keep her promise with Vijay, Namitha seems to be reluctant in accepting offers from Kannada. Her thumbs down to offers from Kannada also suggest that the lady is keen in obtaining a notable spot in Kodambakkam. We do not know whether she is shedding her glamour tag to achieve that.

Shoots of ATM are likely to commence soon and the movie is expected to join the race of Tamil New year releases during April 2007.

Pongal releases – the initial Box Office status

Now that the Pongal fever and the initial obsession for the movies are over with, the movies that are in the race are starting to show their true colors at the box office. If initial reports are anything to go by then take our words for it: Pokkiri is emerging as a winner at the box office.

Thanks to the slashed ticket rates Pokkiri had the biggest of all the openings among the Pongal releases. The close competition came in from Ajith's Aalwar and Vishal's Thamirabarani. Popular dancer-cum-actor Prabhu Deva's Directorial debut in Tamil lived up to its pre-release expectations. Reports suggest that the movie is running to packed halls as opposed to the other releases.

Pongal does not seem to be the sweetest time of the year for Ajith. Though the movie opened to full houses on Pongal, the next few days seems to be a let down. It can turn out to pick up in the later days to come. The third movie in the race is Thamirabarani. With diverse reactions at the box office, it is learnt that Thamirabarani is definitely catching up slowly.

Paruthiveeran hasn't seen the light of the day yet and if good reports and word of mouth of this 25th Jan release gets in motion, the other three movies might have a dent in their collections,
specially in the B & C centers.

Everyone knows that a Mani Ratnam film is always received well everywhere. Now, 'Pokkiri' seems to be leading over 'Guru.'

In UK, the 3 films released were 'Guru,' 'Pokkiri' and 'Azhwar.' 'Guru' secured 15th spot among the UK top films. The Hindi version grossed 1.35 crores in 44 screenings!

Vijay's 'Pokkiri' came 21st getting 19.39 lakhs in 3 shows. In 29th place, Ajith's 'Azhwar' earned 8.57 lakhs in 2 shows.

Among Indian films released abroad that are doing well, 'Pokkiri' and 'Azhwar' are in Tamil and the successful 'Guru' has been made by a Tamilian. The other films come after that. This was the status last week.

In comparison with the earnings from the number of screenings, Vijay's 'Pokkiri' stands first, followed by 'Azhwar' and then 'Guru.'

'Guru' is doing very well in the US. It earned 3.73 crores in 71 shows in the US and 34.27 lakhs from 10 shows in Australia. As far as Hindi films are concerned, this is a new record.

In mass opening in the UK, Aamir Khan's 'Fanaa' comes first, followed by 'Guru.' Then come Shahrukh Khan's 'Don' and Aamir Khan's 'Rang de Basanti'!

Pokkiri – The Pongal Gift of Vijay

The Prelude

My penance has ended today. That too, in the best possible way. The last film of any hero I had watched on any screen (silver screen/small screen) was Aadhi, which was a year ago. (I watched Imsai Arasan few months back, but would consider it a comedian’s film onlyJ) And Pokkiri was the best and fruitful way to end my year long penance.

The History

A disappointing film on his back... Huge expectations of one year from fans… Heavy responsibility to silence the critics… And the new found responsibility of the Next superstar title conferred on him. Vijay hits a huge sixer crossing all boundaries with Pokkiri, handling all the above said issues with ease.

It might not be the best film in Tamil Cinema, it might not be the best film of this year (with Sivaji and Dasavatharam following soon), it might not be as excellent as Ghilli, but it is excellent and brilliant film in its own right. It is sure to leave a mark in the history of Vijay’s film career.

Comparisons with previous Vijay films and the Telugu original are inevitable, but enjoying Pokkiri as Pokkiri with an open mind will give you tremendous pleasure of watching it. I just did that and for this sake, I haven’t even watched the Telugu original till date.

The Credits

The story and screenplay are same as Telugu I suppose, nothing much to write about it. Its one of the best action-packed entertainers ever witnessed by Tamil Cinema. Slick and crisp presentation, racy script and excellent performances take the film to great heights. Be it a faithful remake or a carbon copy, it takes great guts to make an engaging movie with a story and suspense that is known to half of film audience.

It’s all about how a police officer disguised as a rowdy uproots the gangster groups and curbs the evil activities they do.

The Thumbs Up!!!

ü PrabhuDeva – He has proved that he is a great director too. His touch is evident in many scenes, especially the romantic ones (Lift scene in particular).

ü Asin – She makes her presence deeply felt throughout the movie and her role has an important share in the screenplay. She is not yet another dumb heroine.

ü Supporting Cast –Napolean, Nasser, Prakashraj, Sriman... Each and everyone did their roles in the best way.

ü Cinematography by Nirav shah – Best in a Vijay film till date

ü Editing by Kola Baskar – An important factor in keeping the audience engaged

ü Music by Manisharma – Great songs as everyone knows and a decent background score

ü Comedy – By Vijay, great timing. And Vadivelu in parts, though not 100%

ü Art direction – In Maambazham song and in many stunt scenes.

The Songs

These were the best moments of the film. The picturisation, choreography, sets were all very appeasing. The intro song was stunning, Vasantha Mullai was fun, Dole Dole was full of style, Nee Mutham Ondru was mellifluous, En Chella Peru was sexy and Maambazham was brilliant.

Each song had a different flavor. Special mentions to the historic getup and concept of Vasantha Mullai, Prabhudeva-Vijay dance piece in Aadungada, Costumes in Thamizh song, choreography and editing in Dole Dole and the marvelous sets in Maambazham.

The Pokkiri

If you were wondering where is Vijay in the films plus points, well, he is not just the plus point of the film. He is the life of the film. Without Vijay, Pokkiri would have been yet another crap movie. He lives throughout the film, and stands out in acting, dance, emotions, dialogue delivery, action and everything.

And each of these was different from what he did in the string of action movies till date. The last scenes in Police get-up are really stupendous, to say the least. At least for me, after feeling sick of watching unsized/shapeless heroes in that costume in the name of fitting the character and doing homework. It’s a fresh feeling to watch a tummy-less, fit and handsome IPS officer :-D

The only minor downside of Vijay in this film, I would say, is that he has done the different style of dialogue delivery too very consciously in a few scenes - like in the train scene where Asin gives him Upma :) That could have been done better. Otherwise, Vijay rules the entire film.

The on-screen chemistry between Vijay and Asin was really amazing it was nice to watch Vijay getting actually “romantic” after a long time. (Hmm... I guess last time it was Sachien)

The Reactions

I watched the movie in Abirami. It was not an out and out fan’s crowd and a good number of neutral fans did come. But an all youthful audience- almost equal share of men and women. There was loud response for the entry scenes of Vijay, Asin, Vadivelu and Prakashraj and that Police academy training scene.

And for Maambazham song, from start till the end the whole theatre was full of noise and whistles.

The scenes that brought tears of joy in my eyes I should say – Vijay’s intro, the police academy scene and the Vasantha Mullai song.

The Thumbs Down :(

These do not affect the movie’s brilliance in any way, but still they are the downsides:

c Over make-up of Asin in some scenes.

c Comedy in parts (especially the water lorry and nature’s call scenes)

c Few Graphics, especially the glass breakage in climax fight. I wish such unintentional comedies be avoided in future in such serious scenes.

c Unnecessary characters like don’s girlfriend and loud sidekicks (Too many in number) and a what-is-he-doing-in-this-film act of Anandaraj.

c As already said, conscious efforts of Vijay to make dialogue delivery different.

The Conclusion

It is a landmark movie In Vijay’s career in terms of performance and getting close to the “different” thingie that the film audience expects from him. Hope he maintains the same spirit and tempo in all his movies in future and writes pages of history in his name in Tamil Cine World. Vijay fans could not get a better gift for this Pongal… It’s Pokkiri Pongal all the way!!!

After watching the Telugu `Pokkiri,' one wondered how it could be rehashed to suit Vijay. Well, kudos to Prabhu Deva for doing a fine job of the remake.

Kanakarathinam Movies' "Pokkiri" has all the ingredients to make it a box office success, and that is what Vijay needs now after "Aadhi." The story is about a rowdy who kills for money. And thereby hangs a tale. Enters Asin, who loves his manliness and good heart but he spurns her affection.

An overdose

This is one film where Vijay uses his fists and the punch dialogue with telling effect. Only it is an overdose and one is left with the feeling that it is essentially an effort to boost Vijay's image. Asin, beautiful, is a glamour doll and the screenplay just does not allow her to emote or show any histrionic skills. Prakash Raj, who enters the scene in the second half as Ali Bai, provides some hilarious moments.

Vadivelu, on the other hand, fails in his role as comedian. Nasser is his usual competent self and the movie picks up with his revelation. Napolean as an upright police officer is really different. Vincent Asokan as Guru has done a neat job while Sriman as the friend of the hero stands out. Vaiyapuri, Sriranjani and Ashish Vidyarthy have also made noteworthy contributions.

Nirav Shah's angles and visuals go along with the story and the songs have been picturised in a beautiful way. Almost all the songs composed by Mani Sharma are melodious with `Dolu Dolu' topping the list. The song is sun by Ranjith and Suchitra. Pa. Vijay has written the lyrics. Vasantha Mullai' (written by Na. Muthukumar and sung by Raghul Nambiar, V.Krishnamurthy) is not remix, but blends with the tune in a lovely way. Re-recording is above average.

V. Prabhakar has written the dialogue and excels in the punch lines and in the romance scenes.

Produced by Ramesh Babu the film is directed by Prabhu Deva who has done his homework admirably. The dance movements, especially for the `Dolu Dolu' song speak volumes of Deva's expertise. In fact, action and dance garner a lion's share of the frames. And an extra word of commendation for maintaining the suspense till the climax.

Pongal race – Pokkiri outruns Gilli in Kerala

Harvest festival Pongal has set the stage for a few big budget releases of the kingpins of Kollywood. Vijay’s Pokkiri, Ajith’s Alwar, and Vishal’s Thamiraparani released amidst huge fanfare in theatres across Tamil Nadu. There were initial hiccups in the release of Pokkiri when the movie was not released in a few theatres in Chennai.

Fans resorted to stone pelting in display of their anger and they gave it a rest when the movie was screened little later.

Now that the hype is over with, it is time for trade analysis and reports from all over. Trade analysts predict from the initial reports that are pouring in from Kerala that Pokkiri’s performance in the state will outdo the collections of Vijay’s previous hit Gilli in no time.

Sources also suggest that while Alwar has been categorized as Ajith’s fan-only movie, Vishal’s Thamiraparani stand a fat chance to have a say at the box office. Stay tuned for updates on Pongal releases.

Pokkiri great opening

It is time for Vijay fans to rejoice; their hero's movie is the top hit of Pongal. Illayathalapathy Vijay's latest release Pokkiri hit the theatres during Pongal; not surprisingly, it got a tremendous response.

If one takes the number of advance bookings as a sign of how popular the movie is and if we take it as an indication of things to come, Pokkiri is going to rock. In Devi theatre in Chennai, which is Vijay's stronghold, the tickets for Pokkiri have been sold out until January 21.

Udhayam Theatre, another theatre in Chennai has also sold out all tickets for Pokkiri. It is indeed time for Vijay's fans to rejoice, for this is Vijay's release after a one-year gap. Truly Vijay's fans' dils do "maange more" of Vijay. This is in addition to the awesome reviews for the music of the movie, which Vijay's fan term as simply superb.

It's battle royale at the box-office now. The Pongal releases are out and it is a stiff competition between them. The harvest festival witnessed the release of director Mani Rathnam's Guru, Vijay's Pokiri, Ajith starrer Aalwar and Vishal's Thamirabarani. According to initial reports, it looks likely that this Pongal absolutely belongs to Pokiri. The action-packed entertainer starring Vijay and Asin and directed by Prabhu Deva has emerged the clear winner. The movie has opened to 100 per cent collections all over the State. Similarly, it is collecting huge revenue in overseas markets too. A typical Vijay-film, Pokiri with action-romance and humour at the right mix, has won rave reviews too. Also Mani Sharma's music and Nirav Shah's slick photography have helped the movie's cause. Ajith’s Aalwar is not far behind. The actor's movie, known for drawing grand opening, has been witnessing good crowds. However, predictable sequence of events and cliched storyline has not helped the movie's cause. The movie starring Asin, Vivek, Manorama and Lal among others, has been doing decent business in rural areas. Vishal's Thamirabarani too is drawing good crowds. Directed by Hari, the movie has a racy storyline with Prabhu and Nadhiya giving Vishal good company. Mani Rathnam’s Guru, which caters to the niche audience, is collecting well in the A centre. The Hindi version is running to packed houses. Director Ameer's Paruthi Veeran, which stars Karthi (Suriya's sibling) and Priya Mani in lead roles, will be out on 25 January. Expectations are high on Paruthi Veeran, since Ameer rendered an engrossing movie in his last - Ram. Meanwhile, Irandu, which has Madhavan in the lead role, has reportedly managed a decent outing this month especially in the B and C centres. Among films released for Deepavali, Varalaru and E managed to complete a successful 75-day run last week.

This week, it is a five day Pongal special Chennai box-office. It was “Pokkiri Pongal” all the way. The Vijay starrer took an amazing 97 percent opening from five city theatres in three days and is clearly the number one.

The masses are loving it and they are coming back to see it again as Devi and all other theatres screening the film has kept ticket rates at Rs 40 and Rs 30!

The first Vijay starrer in a year; loads of expectation from his fans; another release along with his arch rival Ajith. If you are an ardent Vijay maniac and reading this review with bated breath, we have some good news, Pokkiri has been worth the wait, it lives up to all the expectations.

The hard work that has been put into this movie by Vijay is evident right from the start; the short break seems to have done him good. Prabhu Deva making his directorial debut in Tamil has done a convincing job, with a special mention on the dance sequences.

Pokkiri, branded as an action packed entertainer is sure to strike the right chord with Ilaiya Dalapathi’s fans and the masses. The ‘formula’ has been adhered to well by the script and executed well by the director without appearing stale or repetitive. The tempo of the screenplay, the movie’s single most important factor does not sag through the entire length of the movie.

The action sequences, especially the climax stunt have been well shot. Asin climbs the next step in the glamour ladder; this must be her most glamorous role to date. She leaves an impression, even though the movie starts, moves and ends around Vijay.

The comedy track, handled by Vadivelu has nothing special. In fact, at some places one gets irritated at some ‘below the belt’ stuff that is churned out in the name of comedy. However, the spoof on Ghajini’s superhit song ‘Suttrum Vizhi Chudare’ featuring Vadivelu and Asin has the entire theater in splits. Amusing at times and crass at others, the lighter side of the movie could certainly have been better. Mani Sharma’s music enhances the movie’s appeal.

All songs have come out reasonably well; with Vasantha Mullai remix standing out without demeaning the original. It has also been handled with finesse. Mani Sharma is bound to get a few more offers in Tamil following Pokkiri. The story factor does not seem to hold much significance in the movie. The emphasis is on pacy narration and the approach has worked.
Performance wise, there is not much to mention except Vijay who looks fresh, young and full of energy; the title Pokkiri sits well on him.

Prakash Raj’s character is one of the movie’s disappointments; quite unusual. The way his character has been built leaves a lot to be desired. The redundant ‘Chellams’ in the climax tend to blunt the appeal of the phrase. Prakash Raj, one of Tamil cinema’s finest actors might do well to sit back and analyze the roles that he accepts. He must realize that he too has a fan base that cannot be disappointed. Roles that dent his image may not be well received.

Technically too, the movie is quite well handled. The camera work by Nirav Shah must be appreciated.

Though a sincere adaptation of the original, Prabhu Deva must be commended for not bringing in the Telugu hangover. Pokkiri, aimed at the masses might just cash in on the festive mood and entice the classes too.

A winner, at least it looks to be, after the first day, the overall box office result can only be decided after a couple of days performance. Vijay comes back with a bang, that’s good news for the Tamil industry.

Vijay plays a character called Tamizh, a brat. He works for two mafia gangs along with his friends. He does anything for money. Asin plays the role of an aerobic instructor having the cini name Shruthi.The institution is being run by Nasser, who plays the role of a retired upright cop.

Both the mafia group gets attracted by Vijay's work and they try to convince him to join their group. Meanwhile he falls in love with Asin at the very first sight. Asin too loves him, but hesitates to confess her love to him as he is a reckless criminal. she tries to convince him to leave this kind of work and lead a normal life. But Vijay does not listen to her advice.

The story takes a sudden twist when one of the members from a mafia group is killed. This is when Alibai played by Prakash raj don of that mafia group is introduced. Prakash raj is arrested by the commissioner. Napoleon plays the role of the commissioner.

By the time prakash raj's gang kidnaps Napoleons daughter in order to release him. They distort her character by sending porn pictures and videos of her. Napoleon then releases prakash raj to save his daughter from hell.

But even after Prakash raj comes out of jail, his gang does not let go her and continue to ill-treat her in the same way. Unable to tolerate the abuse she tells them that her father (Napoleon) will kill all those who ill-treated her. She also tells them that one man from the department is involved in their gang.

On listening to this prakash raj becomes very shocked and tries to find out the culprit. They get an information that the culprit is the son of Nasser, a retired upright cop. Prakash raj and his gang tortures and kills him and finds out the culprit. To everybody's shock Vijay was the person from the department who worked along with his gang. He also comes to know that he is an IPS Officer. The movie ends with Vijay rescuing Napoleons daughter from the mafia gang and punishing them.

National Award Choreographer Prabhu Deva has directed this movie. The movie Pokkiri is a re-make of a telugu film Pokkiri.If the violence in the movie would have been reduced it would have been good.Prabhu Deva has directed the movie, if he had done the choreography by himself he would have made vijay fans feel more happier. The camera of Nirav Shah was good. Stunts of Fepsi vijayan's stunts was impressive. All will like Mani Sharma�s music.

This is a movie which is typically suited for Vijay. He has done everything perfect. Asin has done her character well. She has done a character which is different compared to other movies.

All the characters in the movie are perfect.

Pokkiri is smart 'N' excellent movie.

Vijay and Silambarasan want to see Mirugam

Very rarely we come across such responses. Mirugam, which hit the screens yesterday (December 14), has triggered much interest not only among the public but also from the stars.

Impressed by the ads and the first day’s responses, Silambarasan has expressed his willingness to see the film, directed by Samy. Vijay too has conveyed Samy that he wants to see the movie.

Vijay, who leaves for Malaysia with the unit of Kuruvi, has requested the director to arrange a show before he leaves. Samy has planned two different shows for Silambarasan and Vijay keeping their tight schedules in mind.

It is a healthy trend that prominent personalities in Kollywood recognizing others’ admirable efforts. Recently we saw many stars including Vijay and Parthibhan showering praise on Thangar Bachchan and Vadivelu. Now Samy receives rare complements from the leading stars. These kinds of responses would definitely go a long way in encouraging different attempts in Kollywood.

Pokkiri is a power packed mass masala entertainer. If you are looking out for some fun and time-pass entertainment then Prabhu Deva and Vijay combo is sure to make your day. Thrill-a-minute is the calling card of this unpretentious film which plays to the gallery. Superbly choreographed action and song sequences, fast moving storyline laced with Vadivelu�s comedy, romance and subtle sentiments - all make this film a festival treat. Don�t expect any surprises in the plot or treatment. It is a faithful remake of Puri Jagannath�s Telugu Pokiri. Remember that Puri the master copy cat had taken the plot from the Hollywood gangster thriller Dannie Brasco (1997) featuring Johnny Depp and Al Pacino. Tamizh(Vijay) is ruthless, fearless hit man in Chennai underworld. He climbs the mafia ladder much to the dislike of other members in the gang. But he has some principles in the job as he never does any harm to ladies or children. He sees Sruthi (Asin) an aerobic teacher and falls hook-line-sinker for her. Tamizh rubs the local mafia chief Guru who controls the city and kills him. Now the master mind of all crimes, the international don Ali Bhai (Prakah Raj) lands up in the city and appoints Tamizh as the new chief. Now the big twist is that Tamizh is none other than Satyamoorthy IPS who has infiltrated into the gang to clean up the city off its gangsters. All this leads to a riveting climax when City Police Commissioner�s (Napolean) daughter is kidnapped and Satyamoorthy becomes the one-man-army who takes on Ali Bhai and his entire gang. What makes Pokkiri tick is that the story uses all the characters as restless, unbelievable pawns in a do-or-die chess game. To Prabhu Deva� credit, he keeps the tempo running besides making use of Vijay�s immense screen presence and comedy timing. Nirav Shah and editor Kola Bhaskar has used a techno-pop-style for the first time in a mass masala Vijay film that gives it an extra edge. The romance in the lift scene and in the ruins when Sruthi is about to express her love for Tamizh which is cut short with sporadic gunfire and killings has been well-picturised. Vijay-Asin pair has terrific on-screen chemistry. The actress has never been picturised so glamorously as the camera focuses mainly on her front, midriff and back especially in her introductory scene. Vadivelu�s comedy track as a Kung-Fu instructor is hilarious especially the Suttrum Vizhi.. number where he pokes fun at Surya. But the same cannot be said about some scenes when he pees on a bike are in low taste. Prakash Raj is like old wine that gets better with time as he once again surprises you with his performance especially the scene in police custody. It is an out-and-out Vijay film as the wise-cracking rowdy who turns a cop, he is wacky and has great comedy timing. He steers the film to the winning post. Mani Sharma�s music from the original has been retained and songs like Aadungada Ennai Suthi.. and Tamil Tamil.. are hummable and well-choreographed. On the downside, the film is lengthy( 2 hours 50 minutes) and there is too much of blood and gore, including disturbing close-up shots. But on the whole, Pokkiri is enjoyable while it lasts. With a winner in the form of story, Vijay in the company of Prabhu Deva has come out with an action-packed entertainer. With typical 'Vijayisms' (action, humor and punch dialogues) finding a place at right intervals, he steals the show and his charm is spread all through the movie. The life and blood of the movie, the actor charms the audience in dance and stunt sequences. His characterization, though not unfamiliar to the film-buffs, is made interesting by director Prabhu Deva as he has let Vijay to be himself on the screen. Prabhu Deva and Vijay leave their magical presence especially in the dance sequences. Both proven dancers, the choreography for the peppy songs are entertaining and attractive. Asin is attractive and plays a typical heroine falling in love with a macho-man. She does have the opportunity to shake her legs with Vijay. Both Vijay and Asin share a terrific on-screen chemistry. Prakash Raj as the notorious Don Alibhai does an excellent job. His mannerisms and body language would surely win applause from the film-buffs. Napoleon plays an honest police commissioner in the hunt of criminals. Hats off to him for playing the tough role with utmost grace. Vadivelu evokes laughter with his comedy. He succeeds in tickling the funny bone. He dons the role of a kung-fu instructor. Tamizh (Vijay) is a hardcore criminal, who can do anything for money and also change loyalties for currency. He meets Sruthi (Asin) and love is the immediate offspring between the two. A villainous cop attracted by Sruthi threatens her mother to send her daughter with him. Enters Tamizh as a savior for Sruthi and her family. Tamizh works for an underworld gang and he soon rises in life, owing to his bravery and never-say-die attitude. The sequences that throw light on the ruffian attitude and ‘can’t-care-any-less’ stance of Tamizh offer sumptuous treat for Vijay’s fans. His boss and an international don Alibhai (Prakash Raj) arrive from abroad only to be caught by the Tamil Nadu police. An honest cop Mohideen Khan (Napoleon) investigating the cases of Alibhai is blackmailed by Ali's men. What happens next is narrated in a fast-paced, gripping narrative that is sure to bring the audiences to the edge of their seats. The twist of events adds to the thrills. Stunts by Vijayan are a major attraction of the movie. The chasing sequences have been captured well by Nirav Shah's lens. Sreekar Prasad’s editing is crisp with fast-paced cuts. All credit to director Prabhu Deva for managing to sustain the tempo throughout. He has given a perfect formula film for Vijay which should work out well with the masses. He seems to have given more thrust on expressions and all his characters are there, doing what Prabhu Deva wanted from them. Excellent choreography, thrilling action sequences and catchy songs besides cool 'punch lines' from Vijay contribute for a cracker in Pokiri. To sum up, the movie is an action-packed film with loads of fun and thrill. Pokiri is a sweet Pongal treat for Vijay fans.

Vijay's punch dialogue in 'Pokkiri'

Vijay is feeling enthusiastic since the minor hurdles with the Censors have been overcome for 'Pokkiri.'

The Censor had stipulated that some fights, dance movements and dialogues have to be edited from the footage. The importance of Prabhu Deva's scenes were explained and without much harm, 'Pokkiri' has been cleared.

Usually Vijay sees his films with his wife. But he has seen 'Pokkiri' alone because of his tension. That's because his earlier film 'Aathi' flopped and he wants this film to go well.

When the film ended, Vijay was immensely pleased. It was better than he had expected. He's most pleased with his punch dialogue, "Once I make a decision, I don't listen even to myself!" This dialogue is well suited in the film. Already the songs "aadungadaa enna suthi..." and "vasantha mullai..." are hits. Once the film is released, Vijay is positive that the songs will be hits in all channels. The Vijay-Prabhu Deva combination is supposed to have produced some lovely dance sequences.

What else does one need for 'Pokkiri' to be a hit?

Pongal advance booking status – the race begins!

The Pongal race at the box office is already underway. The releases are yet to hit theatres but the competition has already begun and going by the look of things it is going to be really interesting. All three movies are in the action genre and this puts everyone on an even keel. It is going to be a test of star power at the box office.

In the race this time are Vijay's Pokkiri, Ajith's Aalwar and Vishaal's Thaamirabarani. The films have received very good reports from advance booking counters throughout Chennai city. It looks as if at least one of the three films can be declared a hit even before it opens on screens for Pongal.

Pokkiri and Aalwar are releasing on the 14th and Thaamirabarani is releasing on the 15th and all three have already cashed in on the lengthy Pongal weekend if reports are to be believed. According to trade sources, all tickets for Pokkiri in Chennai city have been sold out till the 21st of the month. That is one week of shows booked in advance. Out of this the first two days have been taken up by Vijay fans exclusively.

As for Aalwar, it too has received a very good response with tickets being sold out till the 18th. A shade behind Pokkiri, but with one more day to go before release, things are expected to improve.

Tickets for Thaamirabarani will not be available until after the 17th of the month. However, noon show slots remain open. But, even this response (three days of shows booked) is very good for an actor who is doing only his fifth film.

One can't help wonder whether the ticket price revision by the government has a major role to play in the whopping bookings received. As for Pokkiri, the euphoria is only understandable as a
Vijay film is releasing after one year. The last was Aadhi for Pongal 2006. The real picture of hit, average and flop will emerge only after the first week. Till then, the Pongal releases will bask
in the glory of advance bookings.

Pokkiri team is all agog that the movie has turned out to be a wholesome entertainer. Industry sources suggest that Pokkiri is packaged with all racy elements to make the movie a commercial potboiler.

Meanwhile, censor officials have granted a U/A certificate for the movie.

That apart, the officials have also suggested whopping 20 cuts for the movie. It is learnt that Prabhudeva and Vijay held discussions with the officials to reduce the number of cuts.

Some of the significant scenes that could not evade the scissor hands are the scene showing someone illegally photographing a girl in the bathroom and another gory scene.

Vijay is in happy mood with Pokkiri Pongal celebration.

My last pongal release was Aathi, then I didn't get good story. I was waiting for a good story. This pongal I have Pokkiri. I watched it alone, I very satisfied. My wife hasn't watch it. I'm waitng for her opinion on the movie. My son maybe have royal look but he is pakka local. It is only "koothum kummalam" at my home when the "adungadha enna sutthi" and "vasantha mullai poole" songs from Pokkiri are played.

Since I don't act too close with heroine in my movies, my wife used to make fun of me and asked you dont you properly hug them. When she said so, I got shocked.

I don't like to have a preview show before release and ask people's opinion. I watch my movie once before release and lock the film-box in my office. I join previews of my movie only after the real release.

In Pokkiri, the punch dialogue that I repeat is "Naa Oru thadhave mudivu pannitta, enn pechai naane kekka maadhen. (Once I decided, I don't even listen to my own words)

My next movie is "Alagiya Tamizh Magan, after that a movie with London Karunas. This year I have planned to do three movies. When my movies release in Tamil, I have planned to "dub-it" and release it in Telugu too".

After marriage I always ask for my wife's opinion. I can't do anything without her. So, naa pondaati dhaasannu kooda sollalam. I learned from my own experience, the truth of manaivi oru manthiri.

I dont know whether I'm a good actor or not. But, I have to make sure that those people who believe in me earn profits. I will work hard to make sure all my producers, distributors, and theatre owners earn profits.

The harvest festival is round the corner and so are the releases of a few Tamil films, an annual affair. Since Pongal falls on Monday, some will hit the theatres even today.

High on action and romance is `Pokkiri,' starring Vijay and Asin. Circumstances force the hero to align himself with the villain but not for long. Watch out for the climax that has a surprise. Sri Kanakarathna Movies's `Pokkiri,' produced by Ramesh Babu, is the 45th film of Vijay.

Prabhu Deva, who has directed two films in Telugu, makes his first attempt in Tamil. "The film has love, sentiment, fight and the acting of Vijay. We have shot the film in different locations here and in foreign countries," said Prabhu Deva, who is confident of the box office success of the film.

Vijay found working with Deva a wonderful experience. "I was happy to work with Prabhu Deva, the man who has given two hits in Telugu. The expectations are high and we have worked hard to satisfy our fans. It is a year (`Aadhi' was released last Pongal) since my film has been released and my fans must be looking forward to it and I have tried not to let them down," he said. Mani Sharma has scored the music while Nirav Shah has handled the camera. V. Prabhakar has written the dialogue. The screenplay-direction is taken care of by Prabhu Deva.

The recent films of Ilaya Thalapathy have almost been of the same action genre. Stunt and fights were the core theme of films like Sivakasi, Adi and Thirupachi. Amidst such films, his Sachin was a soft romantic film. But this was not well accepted by his fans and he once again reverted to action movies. But his Pongal release Pokkiri is said to have romantic elements along with action in it.

There is a specific lift scene which is reported to be shot for a longer duration with Vijay and Asin. This scene would have all the ingredients of soft romance and light hearted comedy in it. Vijay in an interview had mentioned that this sequence is sure to be the highlight of the movie. On anti hero and different subjects, he does not mind trying them as he had already tried a similar one in “Kannukkul Nilavu”. But the film was not much welcomed among his fans. Hence he has decided to work in films which are liked by his fans, favorable to his producers and distributors. Good strategy indeed!

Vijay has spoken about what he thinks about the superstar title.

Last year, Vijay had only one film 'Aathi.' Even that flopped. VijayThis year, he is determined to work in at least 3 films.

"I have slogged 7 months for 'Pokkiri.' It will definitely reap rewards." Vijay is to act next with Shriya and Namitha in 'Azhagiya Thamizh Magan' directed by Bharathan.

Fans and media have been speculating that the next superstar after Rajini could be Vijay. "Any man would like to be number one in his field. I am also slogging to become number one. I am happy when people call me the next superstar. But I don't know if I deserve it!" says Vijay, putting the ball in the people's court.

If all the 3 Vijay films in 2007 do well, he would be worthy of the title!
