Moviebuzz | Sunday, 09 November , 2008, 13:28

Is Ilayathalapathy Vijay having political dreams of floating his own political party? After superstar Rajinikanth's interaction with his fans turned out to be a success, Vijay and his advisers are thinking about dabbling in politics by using his strong fan base.

At the fast organized by Nadigar Sangam in support of the Sri LankanTamils who are facing genocide, Vijay in his speech urged his fans to send telegrams to the Indian Prime Minister to intervene. According to sources in the telegraph department it was a huge success as nearly 50,000 telegrams were sent from Tamilnadu to the PM's office.

Now to up the ante on the Sri Lankan issue the star and his fans are conducting a one-day fast and protest at the Chepauk Guest House in Government Estate in Chennai on November 16.

Fans send 30,000 telegrams

Chennai Nov. 4: When actor Vijay asked his fans to send one crore telegrams to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh urging his intervention for a ceasefire in Sri Lanka during the November 1 hunger strike by actors here, his fans took him seriously. An unprecedented telegram traffic of 30,000 to Delhi on the Lankan issue was reported from Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur and Tiruttani in the last two days. That is a much better response to what similar appeals by chief minister M. Karunanidhi and AIADMK leader J. Jayalalithaa had evoked.

Karunanidhi's appeal to his cadres to send telegrams for the same cause saw a mere 1,200 telegrams being sent from these centres in two days. When the AIADMK supremo asked her party workers to send telegrams urging Mr Karunanidhi to quit over his `somersault' on Lankan issue, the figures were slightly better at 5,000 telegrams sent in two days according to reliable sources in the telegraph department.

"Since Sun News telecast the fast of actors live, many fans across the state had a chance to listen to Vijay Sir who urged them to send one crore telegrams to the Prime Minister for pressuring Sri Lanka for a ceasefire. That may be the reason for the spurt in telegram traffic," reasoned Mr Thennilavan, one of the public relations officers of the actor. The state's post and telegraph department is not complaining though as the increased telegraphic traffic has generated additional revenue in a sector that was finding few takers with the advent of mobiles and email. "The everyday telegram traffic has increased two times in the last month," admitted Mr Mahendra Kumar, GM, BSNL Circle office here.

Lawrence targets Vijay and Ajith?

Choreographer-turned-actor-turned-director Lawrence caught the attention of the film fraternity with his speech at the fast organized to condemn the killing of Sri Lankan Tamils in Sri Lanka.

Lawrence appealed to the fans of Rajini, Vijay and Ajith to stop doing the traditional Palabishekam on their favorite stars while their film is being released.

The actor rued that the milk used for the purpose just goes down the drain and is not useful even to the cats. Now, that thought received accolades from all quarters. The star also handed over a cheque on behalf of himself and his orphanage.

Lawrence's talk is sure to strike the right chords among those concerned. However, when the star was questioned whether this is just another gimmick to catch the attention of the biggies or was he particularly targeting Rajini, Vijay and Ajith, he said that he merely put forth his ideas and there was nothing more to it.

Kuruvi or Aegan - Don't lose your life

Behindwoods Team,

We all know that Behindwoods is one of the leading movie portal websites, and I feel it play an important role in determining public perspective. You have the great potential to make a huge impact on today's youngsters. Please pass this across to our youngsters.

Lots of youngsters in Tamilnadu are really good at heart, and are sentimentally and emotionally affected by cinema. I feel movies are meant more for entertainment, and that we need to watch it for our relaxation, whenever we are free from studies or work. It would be beautif ul if every youngster is equally passionate about family, friends and our country's growth. I was very moved to learn from Behindwoods that one of Ajith’s fans wept because Aegan was a disappointment. Another Behindwood’s visitor wrote to ponder –quite accurately – how Kuruvi, a flop – could celebrated 150 days.

Whether Vijay, Ajith or Rajini, they are all very talented actors, which is why they are popular. They are also good human beings, which is why they do so many charitable things for society. Stars have been urging fans to also focus on studies and career, and not be too obsessed with cinema. My feeling is that fans should enjoy watching a movie if it is a hit, and if it is not, just let it go rather than become caught up with why it flopped, and how this might damage the star.

Once I too was crazy about movies and stars. But I was jobless then and didn’t even have money for food. I was searching for something in my life, and it was not to be found in cinema. It’s only because of my parents and friends I was able to survive. I understood it late and then I started concentrating on my career. Now I am well settled, and don’t want this aimless drifting and preoccupation with stars to affect the lives of other youngsters. I watch movies now, but strictly for their entertainment value.

Please friends, love your dear actors but don’t become crazy over them. Even your stars don’t wish that for you.

Yours truly,
Rajesh,

Ajith, Vijay and Kamal raise voices

November 01, 2008

The all day fast on behalf of Sri Lankan Tamils by Tamil actors is in full swing as we report this. Several noted actors and stars turned up in black to signify their presence in the protest. Rajini arrived but did not have a badge pinned on him; someone quickly found one and pinned it on him. As we upload this new s, Rajini is still waiting to speak.
Rajini & Kamal

Radha Ravi extolled the stars for turning up in full even though many were not even in Tamil Nadu, busy with shooting schedules. He said Trisha, Nayanthara, Vikram and many others had to come a long way to attend the fast.

Ajith, dressed in black, looked weary, and even bored. He sat with his head in his hands, often looking around vacantly. Kamal was like a rock, betraying nothing. Rajini was his easy self, smiling occasionally, even agreeing with some speakers visibly by nodding his head. Vijay looked partly interested, and sat very quietly, with his arms folded – which is typical for him in functions. Vikram was comfortable, and was seen in a cap.

Radha Ravi broke into a fiery speech a bout why holding a fast in Chennai is equally important and effective as one in Rameshwaram. He also chided the government for rapping the Tamil cinema fraternity for what had been said over the Sri Lankan issue. His argument was: do we actors and cinema people not know politics? Was not MGR an actor? Is not Karunanidhi a scriptwriter? In other words, he was saying that the cinema fraternity knows the complexity of the issue at hand and will not speak out irresponsibly or naively. He finished by inviting Ajith to address the gathering.

After being received with a tremendous applause, Ajith said a few strong words. He began with the ‘Udal mannukku, uyir Thamizhukku’ which seemed to have a great effect on everyone. He also said that not explicitly stating one’s thoughts did not mean that one does not care about a particular issue.

He was as concerned about the welfare of Tamils as anyone. He also had a go at a few publications that carried false reports about him and requested them to not mix cinema with other issues.

Right after Ajith, Vijay was welcomed with another rousing applause. Citing that the struggling Tamils of Sri Lanka had now been for years without the basic necessities of life and that the film fraternity was now showing their solidarity by observing this fast. He made a call to all his fans and people who cared about their struggling brothers to send petitions to the Prime Minister of India demanding a solution to the issue. He hoped that the number of petitions would not fall short of a crore.

Then, it was Kamal’s turn. He chose to differ from Radha Ravi’s thought that emotions should be kept in check while raising an issue. He said that if the issue was one that really hurt us deeply, then emotions would invariably flow. It is because of this that two fellow directors had to wear a crown of thorns and go jail. But now, they have returned to a reception of garlands. He also said that the response and protests to the struggles of Tamils must not be seen as a regional one and that he would raise his voice wherever people were in trouble.
